B-2 Gets The Biggest Bomb Of All http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htairw/articles/20090612.aspxJune 12, 2009: After three years of effort, the U.S. Air Force has developed a new bomb rack for the B-2 bomber, so it can drop the new, 13.6 (30,000 pound) Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP). Six years ago, MOP replaced the proposed nuclear bomb penetrator. MOP can be carried by a B-52, but a B-2 is more likely to get through an intact, modern, air defense system. The MOP is finally entering production, and a number (not announced) will be stockpiled. The air force is putting a lot of money into developing new bomb racks for the B-2. Recent additions are racks which allow a B-2 to carry eighty 500 pound smart bombs, or sixteen 2,000 pound smart bombs. Another new rack allows the B-2 to carry over a hundred of the 250 pound SDB (Small Diameter Bomb) which has a ground penetrating ability. The B-2 is also now equipped with a phased array radar and targeting pod capabilities, to enable it to find targets, as well as bomb them. The MOP is 20.5 feet long, with a 31.5-inch (80 cm) diameter. The MOP contains 2.4 tons of explosives. This is more than 10 times the explosive power of, the BLU-109 (2,000 pound bomb). The MOP can penetrate about 65 meters before exploding. YIKES!

It would be a lot cheaper to equip those B-2s with tazers. That's the weapon of choice for fascists bent on world domination.

The MOAB makes a bigger boom: These big bombs look cool, but they aren't that impressive. The MOP is an entirely different design although it weighs more, the warhead of the MOAB weighs 18,700 lb and the warhead of the MOP weighs 6,000 lb. I'm find the new GBU-39 Small Diameter Bombs (SDB) more impressive. They are very small, yet have the punch and penetration of larger bombs. MOABs very different, it's a daisy cutter, not a penetrator like this.

A daisy cutter is a type of fuse; MOAB is not a daisy cuter. I know what the MOAB and MOP are. I was posting the videos because of the "big bomb" status they have. It is interesting though they are fitting them for B-2's. B-2's are high maintenance and a very advanced aircraft. The B-52 is an older craft, but it is a hefty design (not stealthy like the B-2). Does the military forsee the use of "bunker busters" against advanced militaries?

Does the military forsee the use of "bunker busters" against advanced militaries? You apparently do not know what a daisy cutter is. While there is a daisy cutter fuse, that terminology is rarely used; a daisy cutter, in fact the Daisy Cutter is/was the BLU-82, which got its name from its ability to clear large areas of ground well of foliage and wooded areas (just like cutting daisies) due to its above ground detonation/air blast-- this was quite useful in creating say, LZs. The term is all about context, which you'd have if you'd ever worked with ordnance, rather than reading. The MOAB is a daisy cutter in a different sense than the original "Daisy Cutter" (the BLU-82), in that it seems to have been designed as a deeper penetrating bomb (actually like this MOP), but can also function in this 'ground clearing' function (the daisy cutter function). In this latter scenario, the 'daisies' could be trees, or personnel (soft [people] and/or medium targets like artillery) conceivably, but few armies would operate with conventional units in tightly packed columns today to make such an extended area application of ordnance likely or useful, so they'll probably suffice with deep targets.

I know they were the BLU-82 modified originally in the field to help them detonate when dropped in the jungle. If the term is used in other contexts, then there is no reason to use it without explanation when talking to the plebes Successful communication requires understanding. Most people here haven't worked with such things, so why talk to us as if we did? The MOAB is a daisy cutter in a different sense than the original "Daisy Cutter" (the BLU-82), in that it seems to have been designed as a deeper penetrating bomb (actually like this MOP), but can also function in this 'ground clearing' function (the daisy cutter function). I heard they used them (daisy cutters as you put it) to help clear mine fields. I don't know how effective that was though. Watching science fiction, we have to assume that in the future, people with advanced technology will inevitably fall back to pre-Napoleonic battle tactics. Battle of Naboo
