Prime Minister Stephen Harper should not have accepted communion at Roméo LeBlanc's state funeral in Memramcook, N.B., the archbishop of Moncton said Wednesday.
Msgr. André Richard said the church law is clear, but he is not looking for any apologies or explanations from Harper or the Prime Minister's Office.
Cameras were rolling when communion hosts were offered to people attending the funeral for the former governor general on July 3.
Harper, who is a devout Protestant, accepted the host but appeared to put it in his program or his pocket, according to some onlookers.
However, a review of videotape shot at the event was inconclusive, and the Prime Minister's Office says Harper consumed the wafer, in accordance with Catholic law.
A PMO spokesman, Dimitri Soudas, said the camera didn't show the whole story.
"Unfortunately, the camera did not stop long enough on the prime minister, but, as I told you, the prime minister is a Christian, and when he was offered communion by the priest, he accepted it, and consumed it as well," Soudas said.
'The church law is the church law'
But Richard said that, according to Catholic law, Harper shouldn't have accepted it at all.
"Only the Catholics can receive communion. The church law is the church law, and when you are attending a Catholic service, you go by the church service," he said.
Soudas said he doesn't see how Harper had a choice.
"I would simply say, 'Who is the prime minister to question a priest who offered him communion?'"
Catholic protocol says non-Catholics or people who do not want to receive communion can either keep their hands folded when they approach the altar as wafers are being distributed, or remain seated.
Richard said it wasn't up to him to brief the prime minister beforehand, but he doubts this was Harper's first Catholic mass.

Please post comments on that YouTube video in defense of the dignity of the Most Blessed Sacrament. There are many disgusting comments there mocking the sacrifice of Our Lord. It's simply unbearable that Jesus Christ continues to come under so much mockery and indignity.

Why did the priest approach the pew and offer it to him? That's ridiculous. Communion is not a delivery service in church. You can't blame a Protestant in that case.

This is clearly the Priest's fault..... He should not have offered it,,, I think the PM was put in an uncomfortable spot, considering the circumstances.

Harper and the bishops should have known better. This isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened. Dauphin, I don't want to read the ugly comments about Jesus. Sorry. It's just too depressing.

oh man! well Harper is a prod so i doubt he knew what he was being handed. i don't know but prods certainly don't respect the real presence. but again it must be asked why did the priest deliver the host to Harper? i don't know if Harper will apologize but i hope he does. if this was something like using the wrong comb at some seik devil worship or sitting at the wrong side of mosque there would be a hell storm. certainly not what the conservatives need right now considering the 400 grand they gave to the unrepentant sodomite pride day love in, in Toronto. just sayin

Oh yes, case in point. Ban that, and this wouldn't have happened.

Well, the priest may or may not have known whether the prime minister is Catholic. I assume the prime minister is as well known (and his religion known) just as well as Obama and his religion is known? (Not to derail this thread, but I really don't know Obama's religion, but it isn't Catholic.) Anyway, the prime minister clearly held out his hand. It was not like the priest forced the Body of Christ upon him. So, there is a little blame to go around here. Perhaps the priest was "going through the motions" saw the hand an placed the host there. The best you can say for the priest is that he obviously was not paying attention to what he was doing. Also, the prime minister was complicit in that he held out his hand to request communion. I blame them both.
