Here in Canada 'hate crimes' also include Jews and Muslims! A couple of weeks ago, we had 'Gay Pride Week'. A statue of the Sacred Heart outside Edmonton General Hospital (founded by the Grey Nuns) and one of the BVM outside St Joachim's Church were both defaced with red paint. No 'hate crimes' outcry there!

Whenever I leave my Breviary lying around, it'll cross my mind that someone might steal it. Then I think for a second and conclude that a Breviary might do a thief some good. Likewise with the BVM statue. One does cringe hearing this clip though. Hearing a chunk of plaster constantly referred to as "her," "she" and "Mary" plays into every possible Catholic stereotype regarding our use of images. don't see how this is not a hate crime Be careful getting on the hate crimes bandwagon. It's a slippery slope.

Let me try to help clarify. Hate crimes are only considered thus when done to non-white and/or non-heterosexual and/or non-Christian. That about covers it.

Let me try to help clarify. Hate crimes are only considered thus when done to non-white and/or non-heterosexual and/or non-Christian. That about covers it. ....and can only be committed BY white, and/or heterosexual, and/or Christians. A post of mine from last month: A Canadian view. Some of you may remember the fundie pastor who joined here last year. He had been arraigned before the Alberta Human Rights Commision for writing a letter to his local newspaper denouncing homosexuality from a Christian perspective. He was found guilty, fined CAD$5,000 and ordered never to publicly state such opinions again including in preaching from the pulpit in his church. OK, this was bad enough, but it gets worse! Late last year a conservative publisher here in Alberta named Ezra Levant republished Pastor Boisson's (sp?) letter, word for word, online. Predictibally, he was hailed before the Commission for 'hate speech'. However, the Commission refused to send him before the Tribunal on the grounds that his publishing the pastor's letter was 'protected political discourse'! Levant's response was simple . He pointed out that what he had published was, by quasi-judicial determination, 'hate speech', that a man had been fined for writing and publishing these exact words and ordered never to utter them in public again. Levant went on to say (paraphrasing from memory), 'The Commision refuses to send me before the Tribunal because I am a Jew! It is a fact that no Jew, Muslim or gay has ever been brought before a Human Rights Tribunal in Canada, because the Human Rights 'hate speech' laws are used only against Christians!'

Did anyone else cringe when the punk callously knocks the statue down? That gesture was just so full of contempt and hate. At least the media is taking it somewhat seriously. Usually they just laugh these incidents off as "haha, silly kids".

It made me cringe, too. Another question is why the vandal came back for the statue. Change of heart? More puzzling: "The vandal" [sic] took the time to put on some sort of a "long sleeve" and (unless my eyes are playing tricks on me) change his shoes as well... before deciding to take the statue from the premises? Methinks it was vandal s (i.e., in the plural).
