Should Be Working

« on: December 24, 2009, 03:22:PM »

In a moment of poor judgement, I brought my white winter coat to a crowded place where it ended up getting stepped on after I left it on a chair. There's now a scuff mark on one of sleeves, and I don't want to have to dry clean the entire coat. I was wondering if anyone knows any gentle home remedies for removing dirt from wool fabric? I'm afraid to try anything because I don't want to make it worse or permanent. The stain seems to be mostly dirt and was never wet. The fabric is 70% wool, 20% nylon, and 10% merino.

If anyone has any tips I would be really grateful.  Smiley

Woolite from the local grocery store is designed for this; follow the directions on the bottle, but instead of throwing it in the washer, mix some up and use a cloth to surface clean it.  Use cold water, and have it flat to dry.  Don't rub it hard or you'll scuff the wool.  Instead, try wicking it out like one would clean a carpet.  Do NOT ever put a stain in a drier or heat dry - this will set it.

I think the fact that it is white will be a bigger problem than the fact that it is wool.  If you can't easily and gently get it out, you're better off biting the bullet and taking it to a cleaners.  Good luck!

Just because God made it doesn't mean we get to "Woo-Hoo" it.

This worked really well...thanks! It got almost all of it out so it's not noticeable anymore. I will take it in eventually but I'll be able to wear for a while longer first. Woolite is fabulous; I had forgotten about it!
