I have a few maternity dresses in the works, I will post those when done. What are you guys working on?
How did you learn to sew clothes? I can sew, but only quilts and mending, mantillas--flat things. I'd love to learn to sew skirts, but there aren't any classes around here. Nor fabric stores any longer.  |

Has anyone noticed that it is difficult to find new maternity patterns? I don't think Simplicity or McCall's have anything new for fall. I found that "Grandma's House" has a lot of maternity patterns from vintage to modern and most of them appear to be uncut. The cheapest seemed to be $12, which is pretty high, I think.

Has anyone noticed that it is difficult to find new maternity patterns? I don't think Simplicity or McCall's have anything new for fall. I found that "Grandma's House" has a lot of maternity patterns from vintage to modern and most of them appear to be uncut. The cheapest seemed to be $12, which is pretty high, I think.

you can also get patterns that are kind of "blousey"...
Or if you find something you like that has a fitted bottom to it, don't sew the piece on and just hem it.

IF you really want to learn how to sew, a great resource would be your local high school or even junior high... believe it or not, they still have "sewing" classes (but they're sometimes called 'textiles' or something more mod than home-ec) anyhoo, call the school and tell the secretary your predicament, and ask them to pass your name/number on to the teacher... they might be THRILLED to pass along their knowledge to you!
this is how I learned about 20 years ago.... the woman was so nice and patient... I'm sure I was alot better behaved than most of her students! a couple of saturdays in her basement cutting patterns on a pingpong table was all it took

I didn't see these questions...sorry! I learned how to sew myself by reading books, asking friends, and a lot of trial and error. Now I am fairly proficient, but it has taken a while to get here. As far as maternity patterns: -buy what you can from the big name patterns and modify them to make you happy -take regular shirt/back closure dress patterns and "make" them maternity. I will try to put together a little tutorial on this tomorrow or Friday. Honestly, to learn how to sew just go get a basic shirt pattern and buy the singer illustrated sewing guide. http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Photo-Guide-Sewing-How/dp/1589234340/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1257395846&sr=8-10Look up anything you don't know (you can also google stuff) and follow the pattern the best you can. Post questions on here and I will answer them and try to help you along the way. You know, we could even do a beginner sew along and I will field questions and give instructions step by step. Who would be interested in something like that? |

They don't have sewing classes in the schools here. You can take a class at the jc, but the machines are industrial and extremely fast. I am learning pretty much by trial and error. |

I'm working on a jumper for my daughter for her birthday (next week!)...all that is left is the zipper. Next up is a skirt for ME! (plus I need to hem some pants)

I found a place that has lessons nearby, a rarity in NJ, and I'm hoping to take lessons after Christmas. I really want to learn to make dresses and skirts for myself and the girls. I think it'd be fun. |
