Well, that is certainly the most comfortable road (no offense intended to you, for I'm much attracted to it myself). Smiley

Here is a link to a copy of the letter by Msgr. Camille Perl regarding the issue of the SSPX Masses: http://www.latin-mass-society.org/perl-011803.htm. Here is a link to a more in-depth article on the issue: http://www.catholicintl.com/catholicissues/sspxnis.pdf.

As best I can tell, it does fulfill the Sunday obligation to attend an SSPX Mass (thus, it appears I stand corrected in some of my comments on other threads and some of my own threads). Neither does is it appear to be a sin to attend an SSPX Mass as long as your intention "is simply to participate in a Mass according to the 1962 Missal for the sake of devotion".

If you are concerned about the Sunday obligation in spite of this letter and article, why not just attend a Diocesan OF/EF parish on the Saturday Vigil and then attend the SSPX parish for Sunday proper? Just an idea though.

If there are any factual errors in the letter or article I linked to, someone please correct me. I do not want to be guilty of giving incorrect information on an issue as important as this. Obviously, obedience to the precepts of the Church, including the Sunday obligation, is extremely important to one's faith and one's soul and I would not want to inadvertently lead a person astray.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that this is opposite of what Rome has said. If the SSPX are not schismatic, which is Rome's position, how can attendance at a Society Mass not  fulfill your Obligation? The Canon is clear, we may fulfill our Obligation in any Catholic Rite. Nothing is said about  unless 'a Dominican affiliated with Rorate Caeli', says differently. Smiley

You are right. The SSPX masses are valid masses and thus fulfill Sunday obligation.

However the priests are suspended, and that distances them from the Church. We shall pray for their leader to understand that from inside they have much more chance to change things than form outside. They are not the teaching Magisterium.

Actually, I was completely unaware that Mons. Perl had spoken this clearly about the issue of the Sunday obligation.  I ha read the "truncated" form of the letter to which he refers, and, in it, his opinion on this matter does not seem clear.  Thank you for the link to the letter.

Because if he wanted to do that, he wouldn't have bothered starting this thread....

I experienced many, many of those while a religious postulant for two years.  However, the "rock and roll" was more like folk adaptations of Lucien Deiss music, and there really was a lot of hand holding and hugging.  Not to mention sitting around a table.  And there was that really strange chapel that looked almost exactly like the officers' dining room (or mess) in The Hunt for Red October...  and the "altar" looked like it was a table from 10-Forward in Star Trek!

Oh, there are so many interesting memories...

I was not able to get over there on Thanksgiving.

It'll probably be one of these Advent Sundays.

I'm a little uncomfortable about mingling however.  I have heard so many negative things about people who go to SSPX chapels and the priests of the SSPX.  Archbishop Lefebvre is probably a saint, but It's hard to shake my preconceptions about the people who actively agreed with him.  I've actually been discouraged from mingling by some people I've told.

Others think I'd be sinning or separating myself from the pope.  This is coming from my own family so its rather hard to hear.

Oh well.

Mingling can be hard for some people, regardless of where.  Some people just aren't comfortable making friends quickly.  Mingle as much as you feel comfortable.  If you tell people you're new to the SSPX and are just trying it out, I'm sure you'll get a warm and welcome response.  Mingle only to the point you're comfortable with.  If you make yourself uncomfortable by mingling too much, you may make the whole experience a downer.  In general, the SSPX people are like any group -- mostly great people, with a few weirdo's and a couple grouches in there for good measure.  If your experiences all tend to the latter, you're just massively unlucky. Sip
Well u. She invited me to synaguge the real ones. So I said well I dig the payos and kipas so sure. And I went. And after the thing (I don't know what to call it wasn't really a service) during which I couldn't follow along cuz they do it there own way unlike catholics which if ur a jewq and show up to mass u can just follow u know kneel when all knell ect. Anyway I sat down and watched the wall  bobbin and all thinkin it was a kinda solitary moshpit or something. Then it ended abrupty and the men went down stairs as the lassies are up top seperated and the rabbi ssat at a table and had a bottle of scotch and shot glasses and we all sat arpound and got real tanked.
Got to hand it to them it was a hoot I camme staggering out of the mibsky spersky shoal synaguge I forgot me bonet behind.
That's minglin.
Donuts just don't cut it.
Just sayin.
