Hello,
I'd like to make a rosary for my brother-in-law for Christmas this year. I know several of you make rosaries, so I was hoping you could give advice on where to buy supplies. Can anyone recommend a good supplier for the crucifix or medal? I have used Fire Mountain Gems and Beads in the past, but I was hoping for a wider selection of crucifixes.
Thanks!

My three favorite online suppliers for metal rosary parts are: The problem you'll most likely run into is minimum order requirements and shipping costs. If you're buying for just one rosary your order amount will be too low and the shipping cost will be just as much as the cost of the parts. I'd recommend ordering the rosary parts, plus some devotional medals and such for yourself and to give away. That will make it worth the shipping costs. I hope this helps. If you have any questions you can send me a PM. Good luck!

I think Lewis & Company will have a broad enough selection for you. I don't recommend them for beads though.

Decide what materials you want, then look through them. They usually aren't that expensive, so you can always get a couple to see, and you'll have parts for future rosaries.

One of my favorite rosaries has rose petal beads. I guess for a man that might be a bit much but they are a lovely craft . . .

How do the beads hold up I've only seen rose pedal bead rosaries in religious article stores and they seem nice and smell divine, but I have always wondered how the natural oils and such of the human hand would affect the beads.

They hold up pretty well. The cheapest way to get them is to make them, but they can be bought online, usually in lower amounts than 59. I have a rose petal crucifix I haven't used it though yet. I don't know if being wet would damage them easily, but they seem to have the durability of a soft wood. If they fell apart easily from normal use, I doubt they'd be used at all.

That's kinda what I figured, but I didn't know since all the oils and swear on a human hand is going to be more demanding than just water Plus there are lots of things that look, smell, feel, etc. nice that are used in all kinds of things that shouldn't be. I didn't know if rose pedal beads was one of these things. Seems like they might be used just cause they smell nice and have an obvious symbolic value. I'm glad you told me they hold up nicely I might consider using them in the future.

I hope there is no swear on a human hand There are a bunch of different recipes out there, and I have not tried any of them. I know a sister who did make such beads, and they have lasted, so they do work, at least, the way she made them. Make sure if you do buy any, that they are actually made of roses, not patterned or simulated.

The beads are essentially boiled rose petals and rose water. The biggest problem is finding enough rose petals to make the paste. Once the scent starts to die down, you can rub the beads with a little rose oil and they pick up the scent again (haven't had to do this yet). My set has held up quite well so far and I use it in my teaching. 30 little fifth grade hands get to touch it and see it . . . If it could break, they probably would break it.
