I swung by the old NO parish this afternoon to go to confession. It is a mega parish of 1500 families. The priest hears confessions for 10 mins once a week before one of the Masses. The number of people that went to confession this week? One woman and myself...I got this horrible feeling as I realized that no one else was going after me. In a parish of well over 2000 people. 2 go to confession and I don't even go there so I don't count...one woman went to confession out of 2000!!! I feel so sad. I don't even know what to say. I wanted to run up to the people coming in for their rock in roll Mass as I was leaving and grab them by the collar and say "go to confession!" All those souls that must be in mortal peril. Please pray for them. I don't even know what to say or do I want to help them!! Are the NO parishes really this bad now?!? I need a drink...

That is so sad, but I wouldn't say it's that uncommon. I will pray for an increase in fervor amongst all catholics At the parish my wife and I were married in (NO) this wasn't the case however. Every Saturday two priest hearing confessions from 2 to 4. I mean hearing confessions, not just being available, you have to get there early if you want to be heard cause Father won't hear them during mass. Also every first Friday there is adoration from 6am to 6am on sat. with confessions from 7pm until Fathers done. I once had my confession heard at 3:30am and there were still at least half a dozen in line behind me. This is truly the exception, but there is hope.

Take heart. Things at the NO church my husband and I usually attend were bad until two new priests came. Father started talking about the importance of confession at every mass. The two priests arranged to keep the confessional open throughout the masses on Sunday and extended hours on Saturday. The lines went from nonexistent to surprisingly full. I remember going in one Saturday and being shocked to see the length of the line. Both men are good priests and try to do all they can to lead the parish back to God. They began quieting down the congregation by getting kids to lead everyone in praying the Rosary, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, the Litany of Saints . . . (It was a smart move; people might scoff at adults leading prayer but never children!) The carnival atmosphere is no more and I can honestly say that mass is much more reverent. They are now trying to build up Adoration and teach people why it's important. Things are not quite what they should be but it's much better. Even at an NO parish, good priests can make all the difference. I pray that God will send us more good priests; we need them desperately.

It is NOT the case in every NO parish. I preach, fairly frequently, about the need to go to confession. I also hear confessions for more than ten minutes a week.
The priest certainly can make a difference here. Some priests shorten their confession times because, they say, "Nobody comes". It then becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that, if the people see that it isn't that important to Father, they will conclude that it isn't that important for them.
RalphKramden and Fontevrault have seen that there are good, solid priests in parishes. I'm here to tell you that there are more of us out there than most people suspect. Keep looking, you'll probably find one of us.

That sure is good to hear Father! Very, very good to hear! When I attended this parish three years ago there would be 20 or 30 for confession every week and more during Lent. I talked to some of my old friends that still attend there and they said they hadn't been to confession since First Communion. I don't understand how that's possible frankly.

Many of us younger folk were never taught about the importance of frequent confession. It's sad but true. I'll give you an example of how bad CCD can be: My confirmation class was lead by a 20 something woman who flat out told us that the only reason she taught the class was because she was an alcoholic and it kept her sober on Saturday nights. She didn't teach us a thing. The "test" to see if we were ready to be confirmed was if we could recite the Our Father, Hail Mary, Apostle's Creed, Nicean Creed, and Grace (before meals). Pathetic if you ask me.

Unless the Lord God had been present in your spirits, all of you would not have uttered the same cry. For, although the cry issued from numerous mouths, yet the origin of the cry was one. Therefore I say to you that God, who implanted this in your breasts, has drawn it forth from you. Let this then be your war-cry in combats, because this word is given to you by God. When an armed attack is made upon the enemy, let this one cry be raised by all the soldiers of God: It is the will of God! It is the will of God! Genesis XXVII:iii-iv Take thy arms, thy quiver and bow, and go abroad:and when thou hast taken something by hunting, make me savoury meat thereof, as thou knowest I like, and bring it, that I may eat: and my soul may bless thee before I die. Si hoc signum legere potes, operis boni in rebus Latinis alacribus et fructuosis potiri potes! "You are the ones who are happy; you who remain within the Church by your Faith, who hold firmly to the foundations of the Faith which has come down to you from Apostolic Tradition. And if an execrable jealousy has tried to shake it on a number of occasions, it has not succeeded. They are the ones who have broken away from it in the present crisis. No one, ever, will prevail against your Faith, beloved Brothers. And we believe that God will give us our churches back some day. My prayers. There are many great NO parishes where the confession line is really long, also some bad ones. The bad ones need a lot of prayers!

I know so many parishes with this same problem. The root of it is simply not preaching on confession. I've seen the most liberal parish turn around simply by the priest preaching on confession. If there's anything that can save a liberal parish, it's repentance.

Last week I ran into a woman from my RCIA class.
She "no longer goes to church, but [does] lots of good in the community, so [is] a good person."
Of course, the pastor said that there was "No such thing as mortal sin because very few of us will ever have that much knowledge."
So without the danger of mortal sin and working at the food bank erasing venal sin, who needs Confession?

A good friend and worthy adversary.
Live your life in such a way that every morning when your feet hit the floor...Satan shudders and says..."Oh No...he's AWAKE!"
Sometimes the Internet reminds me of being in a chicken coop with an infinite number of Chicken Littles at any given millisecond dodging pieces of their falling skies.
There is a subtle difference between "invincible ignorance" and intolerably stupid.
