Most large stores do not like to really address specific holidays directly. They seem to try to be just "warehouses" which "happen" to have certain items for sale based on marketing research, rather than an observation of an actual event.

I guess it is the price to pay for large organisations.

I'm sort of glad a huge conglomerate is nixing Christmas.  It's time to get Christmas back to where is should be - in our hearts, families, communities and  churches.  Not paganized and obliterated on a store shelf, a corporate catalog or the considered the bottom line when it comes to a business staying afloat or not.

Yeah, I guess I'm a scrooge and a bit of a puritan but the current commercialization of one of the holiest days in our religion is scandalous.  I would be glad not to see this type of  "Xmas" coming from conglomerates like Toys R Us.

AFA's 2009 listing of top retailers and how they recognize Christmas

Based on current advertising, below is a list of companies that avoid, ban, or use the term "Christmas" in their advertising. We urge you to contact the "naughty" companies by using the contact information provided below. We will continually update the list, so check back often.

Criteria - AFA reviewed up to four areas to determine if a company was "Christmas-friendly" in their advertising: print media (newspaper inserts), broadcast media (radio/television), website and/or personal visits to the store. If a company's ad has references to items associated with Christmas (trees, wreaths, lights, etc.), it was considered as an attempt to reach "Christmas" shoppers.

If a company uses the term "Christmas" on a regular basis, we consider that company Christmas-friendly.

A company may be removed from the "bad" list by providing documentation to AFA.

*A company may use "Christmas" sparingly in a single or unique product description, but as a company, does not recognize it.

I just can't get worked up about companies not using the word "Christmas" in their advertisements.  I agree with Mike... maybe it's a good thing to separate crass commercialism from a holy day.

I'll admit that I get annoyed at being wished "Happy holidays" but I'm not going to boycott a store that uses it in their advertising.  For instance, the AFA guide is offended that Barnes and Noble offers a "Holiday Gift Guide".

I just don't see anything wrong with that.  There are other holidays being celebrated in December besides Christmas.  I have never been an apologist for religious pluralism but the AFA guide has turned me into one.

I agree.

I kinda like the Dutch custom of exchanging presents and all the festivities on St Nicolas Day. Christmas itself is a Holy Day. But then, that sorta disrupts Advent. Although the current materialistic nonsense does so, too. I guess it would be the lesser of two evils. I think Mexicans make some fuss about Kings Day, which is after Christmas, when the Magi are said to have arrived. That would work, too. Probably better. I'm surprised the retailers haven't jumped on it - it would stretch the shopping season another couple weeks.

I wish Advent was regarded as a season. Currently, by the time Christmas arrives, everyone is sick of it. And then you start singing Christmas music at Mass in your sickened state....  My old parish had a Christmas tree lot. One year, Christmas was on a Wednesday. They closed the lot the Sunday before. So much for celebrating (honoring?) Advent in the home followed by decorating the tree before Midnight Mass. Not a problem anymore, with the artificial tree.....
