Perhaps the greatest reason for the current crisis in the Church is that too many people in the Church, particularly in senior positions, no longer accept the authority of the Pope. Where there is dissent, and where personality and self-interest are uppermost, there is decay and lapsation. Where Christ and obedience are to the fore the traditional life of the Church is allowed to flourish unhindered and the spiritual life of the Church flourishes, parish life flourishes, priestly and religious vocations flourish, and the vitality of the faith flourishes. The evidence for this is becoming more clear as each year passes. Those who refuse to recognise this are allowing their own human rationale and agenda to blind them to the undeniable growth that is taking place before their very eyes. They wilfully refuse to see what is becoming incontrovertible.

The greatest problem is the Popes themselves no longer accept the authority of the Pope. 

We are still stuck in a situation where Catholics either view the Pope as not having any legitimate authority and Catholics viewing the Pope as God on Earth and irresistible in all aspects.

That has lead to Popes like John XXIII (rumored to have said, "We are infallible enough."  when he was asked if Vatican II would declare any dogmas.) 

To Paul VI actually taking advantage of both the liberals and the conservatives by ransacking the Church with destructive changes.

To JPII appointing bad bishops, allowing abuse at virtually all occasions and like Paul VI paying lip service to "tradition" while undermining it constantly.

Each Pope has allowed less and less ceremony surrounding the papacy to continue.  Remove the crown, remove the coronation, remove the sedia gestatoria, remove the crown from the papal coat of arms.

In "The Final Conclave" by Fr. Malachi Martin from the 1970's.  He mentioned the raising of Joseph Ratzinger to the position Cardinal in an attempt to "put the brakes" on wild liberals.   He didn't think Ratzinger would become Pope but he was placed to "slow down" the changes, not to put a stop to them. 

As far as the health of the Church goes, the bad bishops are the fault of the Popes.  No one else.

So true, Gerard.  Peter and his successors were relegated by Christ to rule and govern His Church and many have failed,  .Christ's only purpose for His Church is the salvation of souls.  How many souls have been lost we will only know when we receive that knowledge and it will be imparted only when we are in heaven.  Fr. M. Martin was so right in his writings about the Church. 

The pope has a lot to answer on his Judgment day.

Is this a quote from the early times of the Reformation? (later, when the popes changed but doctrine did not they understood that it is easier to rewrite the Gospel

The question is: do the have the authority, or they are fake?

John Paul II said this in his Papal Inauguration Homily: Pope John Paul I, whose memory is so vivid in our hearts, did not wish to have the tiara; nor does his Successor wish it today. This is not the time to return to a ceremony and an object considered, wrongly, to be a symbol of the temporal power of the Popes.
