Does anybody know of a good site(s) where I can find information on state and local gun laws?

Yours state's website should have that information, too.

And the standard advice still applies: for legal advice, consult a lawyer.

Thanks everybody!

I'm looking to get a gun, but I live in California so I figured there has got to be a lot of  hoops I have to jump through first.

Not as many as up here.  Wisconsin and Illinois are the only states with no concealed carry.

I read an article about some people open-carrying in San Diego.

Good idea, Texican.

Try the State's AG's website.

You can also contact a gun store - they should be able to point you in the right direction, especially if you're planning to carry it.

this site's pretty cool for concealed carry laws:
http://www.carryconcealed.net/legal
shows which states honor which other state's permits

... That'd be my recommendation.

That's the best bet. They'll know all the hoops through which you need to jump, and how to jump through them. A real gun store, not some chain. There's some sort of ID you need to get; I haven't bought any new toys in years, but i read that it changed. Used to be a hunter's safety course certificate was enough. Or proff of honorable discharge from the military. Or take a twenty question quiz adminstered at the gun shop. But like I said, I heard it changed.

If you join http://crpa.org/ you'll get a little booklet outlining the state's gun laws. If you really want to own a gun, you almost have a duty to join the NRA as well.

As for concealed carry permits, theoretically they're possible, but very rare. I met a gun dealer who frequently carries large quantities of guns in and out of gun shows, and his application was refused - no good cause! Then again, there was some police chief in Elk Grove who issued them by the score to just about anyone. It's up to your local authority, not the state, to issue it. As an aside, Diane Fienstein had one when she was mayor of San Francisco. But no one else could get one.

concealed carry permits are not hard to get in florida or georgia, probably any southern states where most people still believe in defending yourself, your family, and anyone else threatened by thugs.

Of course, o'bama will probably use the ft. hood shootings to crack down not on extremist muslims but on law-abiding gun owners.

Read the Second Amendment. That's all you need to know.
