I was on another site today and read a comment from a woman who said that she wanted to veil but needed to save money in order to buy a chapel veil. I was wondering what you guys thought about a way of making veils more available. Do you think women might veil more often if veils were made available for free? I've seen chapel veils on sale for $9-$12 - not very expensive. And yet, money can get tight. I'd love to hear what you think.

many churches have veils available in the back that you can use during Mass...and they're free.

I think it's a great idea. My wife and I attend a church of the fssp and she made a few dozen for the parish. We are going to supply some local NO churches with some veils and literature.

$9-12 for a chapel veil? Wow! Lace is not that expensive, I'm sure you could make a whole bunch of those veils for a few dollar's worth.

Shhh! I'm sneaking this post from my church supply store... Our chapel veils are 4.50 and our mantillas are 14.25 and that includes the little carrying pouch with draw string. If you order them online you're going to pay a shipping charge. Surely there's a religious supply store in your area.

There isn't one unless I drive to Denver.  But, I sew pretty well and was thinking I could make a whole bunch of chapel veils. If I print some pamphlets on the importance of veiling and take them around to the local NO parishes, maybe, just maybe women will use them. If a few others get involved, maybe it could change things and bring back a little piece of important reverance for the Blessed Sacrament beyond our TLM parishes. Sound good?!?! Believe it or not our religious supply store does not carry veils. However, it does carry a nice selection of books about how to behave while worshipping in a synagogue, a mosque, and a Hindu temple. (I am not making this up.) This is a very liberal diocese and there is a huge emphasis on ecumenism (and the rights of illegals). And people ask me why I love the SSPX!  |

Just what I was thinking . . . I've seen big changes at my local NO parish and have begun wondering if part of the problem is that people really don't know any better . . . A little education might be a push in the right direction. |

I think a "veiling ministry" would be lovely! I can whip out a veil of lace in about 10 minutes on the sewing machine. I can whip out one of see through crepe like materieal in about that same time. Veils shouldnt be hard to come by. Maybe in literature you hand out or leave at parishes, you could mention that thrift stores sell scarves for very cheap, and that might be a good option for someone who is finding themselves strapped for cash.

What not just wear a cap if one is short on money for a veil? After all, veils are a rather new introduction to the Christian peoples of the United States. Before Jackie Kennedy made veils cool, hats were what women in America wore to church.

Which women? While Jackie Kennedy is from before my time, I've seen many photos with women veiled, coming out of a church. My grandmother never wore a hat - always a veil.

A little education might be a push in the right direction. Just read the underlined section, and I think you've discovered the reason most women don't veil at the NO. My first TLM was the first time I had seen a veil in use. This seems to be the case for most people my age. A girl who went with me once, said that she knew where some old ones were at home, and now that she knew how, she would wear one if she ever went back. She actually seemed somewhat excited about the idea. Too bad she lost the Faith...  |

If you want a Chapel Veil ASAP, then drive to your local WALLYWORLD (WalMart) and buy a small black or white scarf. Thats what my wife did. Then I went online to ebay and bid on a couple and bought them for 2.25 and 5.50 respectively. Add a couple of bucks for shipping and bingo. when I received them in the mail I was really impressed at how nice they were. My wife gave one to another friend of hers.
Our Latin Mass group bought about 500 light weight plastic veils and a big container of "bobby" pins. I'll try and find out how much we paid and where we got them. will post answers back here tomorrow afternoon.
