Maybe it is simply the way the BBC sell it over here. Maybe American's don't get the full PC media spin we do. I'm just sick of the double standards of these people. It they are so proud of disabled people who can wheel themselves down the track faster than other disabled people, then why abort them without question as soon as they find there is something likely to be wrong with them?
Anyway it hacks me off. Celebrating disabled people's "sporting" abilities to me seems perverse when they could instead celebrate their intellectual capabilities, musical, artistic, poetic, acting, counseling, etc. There are literally thousands of activities where they could be as good if not better than able-bodied people. The one thing they are NOT good at is sport.
It is utterly perverse to give them medals while supporting the wholesale eradication of pre-born disabled people through genetic selection.

I'm not the only one who find it irritating either. In the past I would at least watch the Paralympic races Tanni was competing in. Now she's retired even that motivation no longer exists. Still, I'm not the only disabled person who won't be glued to the TV during the Paralympics. A friend of mine, who happens to be a fairly prominent member of the disability rights movement, regards the Paralympics as "irritating".
For a start, she believes the classification system doesn't work. Athletes are placed in categories according to their type and level of impairment. Obviously, the number of categories has to be kept to a minimum, otherwise the Paralympics would be impossible to organise. But she believes that the categories are so broad, you can't guarantee that like is competing against like. She claims that athletes try hard to secure a placing in the 'lowest' category possible to increase their chances of winning a medal. She also argues that the Paralympics marginalises those crips, like me, who are too severely disabled to join in.
Her main concern, though, is the effect the Paralympics has on perceptions of disabled people. "I know in my bones that the Paralympics feeds the public's considerable appetite for admiring our pluckiness and courage, reinforcing the tedious stereotype of the brave crip," she says. "I just don't buy it that people watch the Paralympics first and foremost for its value as a sporting spectacle". I wonder how common her views are among disabled people? http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/crips-column/2008/08/sport-watch-paralympics

Oooohh, now you're insulting DKs writing disability. I won't have that.
I believe he is writing on a Blackberry. For all you know he has fat thumbs. Besides he is constantly mentioning that his spelling and grammar are not the best because he accesses the internet on some type of mobile device.
Everyone is so easily offended nowadays. When did people start to become so very touchy?

I know he's on a Blackberry. He probably would write very well given a proper keyboard. But I was referring to what he actually writes on this forum.

Everyone is so easily offended nowadays. When did people start to become so very touchy?
If you are referring to me (since I kind of started the stink about the special olympics joke)- I don't consider myself touchy nor has anyone who knows personally me ever called me that. Plain and simple- I was offended by the joke because I had a handicapped son who died from his complications. It is very easy to look at a handicapped person and only see that they are a burden to someone. When in fact- these are people's sons and daughters and they are loved. I never thought that we would have a handicapped child but it can happen to anyone. If you have ever lost a child then you know how I feel. If you haven't, I hope God spares you of this pain. I'll stop now before I get accused of a being a "wuss" or something worse.

Dealing with a handi capped child is such a blessing, in a way. My brother is severely schizophrenic, he has OCD, and a myriad of other issues. I consider him to be the most respectful, and darling man Ill ever meet my whole life. Theres something to be learned from them...

Arguing on the internet is like running in the special olympics: even if you win, you're still retarded. If people have to swear, then that's one thing, but I cannot see how ANY Catholic could be so demeaning to disabled people!! Time to stop and think people!! Sorry guys it was just a joke, a joke in poor taste, I meant no offense FWIW I have my own personal experiences with mental handicaps (not me myself but those close to me), not that I'm-a talk about it.
