I viewed your "Classical Gas" performance. Your playing is great! I wish I could play as cleanly you do. Practice isn't my strong suit. The most complex thing I can play is a pretty simple arrangement of Sleeper's Awake, but I can't get through it without making big mistakes. It doesn't help that I only have a steel string. I should really invest in a classical guitar. I play with my fingernails, never having learned to use a pick.
Can you play Cavatina?

Thanks! That was just another fun project... learning it in a week was definitely a challenge, but it got me back into playing. I hadn't really been playing much anymore until I decided to tackle Classical Gas. I haven't learned Cavatina, but maybe I'll check it out next. I only play steel string as well, and only use a pick very selectively. I do often use a thumb pick, though. Just keep on pickin' and keep on playing. Practice is the only way to improve! You will always hit points where you just know you've finally mastered a particular song or musical concept, and that is often the driving force that catapults you head-first into practicing and playing even more. Learning music comes quickly to me, since I devoted most of my life to "learning" music. I started playing the organ at age 8, and it all cascaded from there. I learned the guitar and jazz piano, and then picked up brass in high school. I just started playing tin whistle earlier this year. I spent my entire high school "career" focused on music. In fact, my senior schedule was Band, Choir, AP English, Jazz Improv Lab, Music Tech, History of Rock. Yep... only one "real" class. But it was definitely fun. Played trombone in jazz band, euphonium in concert band, accompanied the choir, sang in district and regional choirs, etc. So the concept of learning music is second nature at this point, regardless of the instrument. However, I'm actually not "proficient" on any of the instruments I play. I've never been satisfied with my performance on any single instrument, and I could never reach that proficiency because I simply can't resist the urge to learn a new instrument before I've mastered the last instrument! It's a major fault, but it's irrelevant because I'm having fun with it. Oh, and thanks to those who kindly donated the fishies to my fishie-bank! |

Thanks. I'd say all-in it took between 16 & 20 hours somewhere. I should have kept better track, but I'd just sit down for a couple hours a day and drill it out. Since you can play all those instruments you could record an album by yourself. You're a one-man band! I've done several multi-instrument recordings. It's tough. Funny thing is, I can sing or play in tune with anyone else... but I have trouble singing/playing in tune with myself!  What microphone are you using in that video? And what kind of guitar? I'm a gear nut, I can't help asking. Also do you use multitrack software? I use Adobe Audition. Mics are Behringer condensors. I don't remember what model. The guitar is actually my dad's Sekova (a Martin "copy" from the 70's). I use that guitar when I want the punchy bass that the solid Rosewood offers. For recording, I use Cubase LE4. I have a Lexicon USB audio interface. |

I begin to lose interest if I practice more than 45 minutes in one sitting.This practice-when-I-feel-like-it-approach holds me back. I've been playing for more than 10 years and improving at a snail's pace. It took me about two months to learn a very simple arrangement of Sleeper's Awake, which I should have learned in 2-3 weeks if I had sound practice habits. You have high quality equipment! I used to have a Seagull guitar that was real spiffy (this one: http://www.seagullguitars.com/products6+folk.htm), but the neck warped after a couple years of not treating it well and I bought a used Washburn acoustic/electric. I have a G-Track usb mic. I hear these usb mics are not good for professional recording, but the G-track suits my purposes fine. I can plug my Washburn into it and sing into it at the same time, which is a plus because I can't sing in tune without guitar accompaniment. I'm going to get a swivel mount, because I have to lean forward when I sing and the awkward posture really takes a toll on the vocals. I make my own recordings. I'll sing and strum on one track. Then I'll play lead guitar on 1-2 tracks. And occasionally I'll put a beat to it. But without any other instrumentation the recordings tend to be colorless, though they're fun to construct. Um... if people are asking for songs for you to learn, how about Tarrega's Recuerdo de la Alhambros. Fantastic guitar piece.  I started playing when I was 6 or 7, buit stopped when i was 18 or 19 cos i never really wanted to in the first place. probably couldn't play anything anymore lol. |
