I saw Donnie Darko on DVD today. Even after looking at the explanations online, I still don't get it Has anyone else seen it?

I saw it awhile ago and agree that it was a head scratcher.
I was not impressed.

I know a Puerto Rican guy that runs around saying "Donnie! Donnie! Darko!" I thought that was just the effects of the LSD...I guess it's a movie. Mystery solved eh?

Unless the Lord God had been present in your spirits, all of you would not have uttered the same cry. For, although the cry issued from numerous mouths, yet the origin of the cry was one. Therefore I say to you that God, who implanted this in your breasts, has drawn it forth from you. Let this then be your war-cry in combats, because this word is given to you by God. When an armed attack is made upon the enemy, let this one cry be raised by all the soldiers of God: It is the will of God! It is the will of God! Genesis XXVII:iii-iv Take thy arms, thy quiver and bow, and go abroad:and when thou hast taken something by hunting, make me savoury meat thereof, as thou knowest I like, and bring it, that I may eat: and my soul may bless thee before I die. Si hoc signum legere potes, operis boni in rebus Latinis alacribus et fructuosis potiri potes! "You are the ones who are happy; you who remain within the Church by your Faith, who hold firmly to the foundations of the Faith which has come down to you from Apostolic Tradition. And if an execrable jealousy has tried to shake it on a number of occasions, it has not succeeded. They are the ones who have broken away from it in the present crisis. No one, ever, will prevail against your Faith, beloved Brothers. And we believe that God will give us our churches back some day. It's good, but sad. Just watched it a week or so ago for the second time. It held up rather well. Some movies get crappier the more you watch them. Not the case here though.

Well the basic plot of the movie is about Donnie Darko saving the world, Whats disgusting is that they make several references to him being the 'messiah' if you will. Even the old woman that used to check the mail box everyday, she used to be a nun then lost the faith after finding out about this 'new messiah' type thing. I dunno, i've not seen it in forever. The last time i saw it was on youtube in like 13 pieces. I remember thinking somehow him having sex with his girlfriend was this ultimate experience he had to achieve before he could die. I dunno, it was good in the sense of making you think and entertaining my tiny little human mind, but on the grand scheme of things..its pretty much a cheap shot at The Church. At least thats what i gathered from it. Am i crazy?

You have to see the Director's Cut for it to make any sense and even then you'll probably have to watch it a few times.
Donnie is a sort of Messiah figure. It's really an excellent movie with a lot of redeeming qualities and themes. There are certain other ties to Catholicism throughout the movie as well.

Director's cut huh? I thought it was good as is, though none of the symbolism jumped out at me. I guess I should watch it a few more times...
