Wow... how could the last Holy Father have gone through the banal rites of the 1970 Missal after having experienced this?

Wow... how could the last Holy Father have gone through the banal rites of the 1970 Missal after having experienced this?
Good question.

How could Judas have been privy of our Lord and still betray Him in the end?

How could Peter have personally witnessed the transfiguration of Christ (Luke 9:28 et seq.) and still deny Him thrice in the face of His accusers?

The answer is simple: human weakness. Without God's assistance and grace, we can do nothing.

Scripture itself gives witness to this reality. Remeber Peter's memorable confession in Matthew 16:16 in response to Christ's question. Peter's confession of faith is the foundation of Christianity itself but Christ tells him that "flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven." God acted first, Peter then followed suit. Without God, Peter would never have confessed Christ's divinity in the first place.

"THE LORD is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the protector of my life: of whom shall I be afraid?" (Psalm 26:1)

"I love truth," says he, "and not sects. I am sometimes a peripatetic, a stoic, or an academician, and often none of them; but—always a Christian. To philosophise is to love wisdom; and the true wisdom is Jesus Christ. Let us read the historians, the poets, and the philosophers; but let us have in our hearts the gospel of Jesus Christ, in which alone is perfect wisdom and perfect happiness." — Petrarch

"At heart we are all snobs—whether we acknowledge it or not, however egalitarian we may be in theory and however nervous we might be about our own position in society. Everyone needs, and almost everyone finds, someone to look down on." — Theodore Dalrymple

L et us pray

O  God, who gave joy to the world through the resurrection of thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ; grant, we beseech thee, that through his Mother, the Virgin Mary, we may obtain the joys of everlasting life. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
