Vatican City, Mar. 23, 2006 (CNA) - As the Pope met today with members of the College of Cardinals, who are in Rome for tomorrow’s Consistory where 15 new cardinals will be added to their ranks, the subjects of the schismatic Saint Pius X Society as well as the use of the Latin missal and retirement age for bishops largely held the floor.

According to CNA’s sources in the Vatican one of today’s main topics of conversation surrounded the possibility of lifting the excommunication on Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre and the four bishops ordained by him before his death. Their group, the Saint Puis X Society broke away from the Church following the Second Vatican Council.

In addition, the Pope and the Cardinals discussed whether or not they may declare a full amnesty for the free use of  Pope V's Latin missal; and how to do so without betraying the spirit of the Vatican II Council.

The second major topic of conversation surrounded the retirement age for bishops.

Given that life expectancy and quality of life have improved since the original age of 75 was put in place, some cardinals have suggested the possibility of postponing the legal age of retirement to 80.

150 of the 193-member College of Cardinals were in attendance today for a day of prayer and reflection called for by Pope Benedict ahead of the Ordinary Public Consistory--including the 15 which will be incorporated tomorrow. The Vatican said that today’s meetings followed the general format of discussions used prior to last year’s papal conclave.

The official languages of today’s meetings have been English, Italian, French and Spanish.

What part of the "spirit of the Vatican II Council" would we NOT have to betray in order to return back to the days of old?

I would say every part as that "spirit" was Lucifer who must be rebuked by all especially Catholics.

The world is moving so fast. Fellay is in the leadership of the largest group of non-modernized Catholics in existence. He has perhaps the greatest responsibility of any man on the planet today. He should be acting very cautiously.

It makes no sense to recommune with Modernist Rome before they have renounced their modernism.

The stance should be, "We are here doing what the Catholic Church has always done; do you care to join with us in this activity?" rather than "Lets just agree to disagree."

I sure hope that this becomes true. It may cause some bishops to be very cranky when Latin Mass parishes seem to be doing better
than Novus Ordo ones for some mysterious reason.

I think the real issue here is admitting that the Vatican II mass isnt cutting it.  I don't know i wasnt alive, but I am guessing no one was all that miffed when they changed in 1962.  The SSPX guys were up in arms from day 1 after vII.   I think they see that there is considerably more faith among those attached to the traditional rite than in the novus ordo crowd.   I think with the trends  how they are,  there  will inevitably be a course correction and the traditional mass will get the blanket approval  it should never have lost.

These guys are such liars. The SSPX is NOT schismatic. Sheesh.

I know what you mean. We have almost no vocations in our Diocese in Nerbraksa - and here they actually wonder how the diocese of Lincoln is producing so many vocations, in fact, the top ones in the nation! (Lincoln permits no female altar boys and have the Latin Mass available plus contain the American seminary of the FSSP).

Everyone in my town knows how ultra-conservative even the Novus Ordo Masses are in Lincoln, and that they have the Latin Mass widely available also. You know, you'd think even the numbskulls would 'get it' by now, good grief!

I read that the traditional carmelite monastery in Cody, WY already has 7 monks and 35 men interested in joining.  They began in 2003 and have a goal of 30 monks.  They will meet their goals soon.
