This is one of those questions I should know the answer of....

I was just wondering what the different coloured ribbons that are found in Missal's are called and do the colours represent the current time in the Church calendar?

If so, green would be used for the period we are in now yeah?

Beauty.

What a good question. I don't think anyone ever explained that one to me.

I use mine to mark my places between the Canon and the specific prayers for the day.

I use the extras to mark something I want to remember. Rarely works.

Here's what my Fr. Lasance New Roman Missal says

Yellow(gold)ribbon- for ordinary of the Mass

Green ribbon- on Sundays after Pentecost; also Sundays from Epiphany to Septuagesima

White ribbon- on feasts of Our Lord except those of his passion; on feasts of Our Lady; on feasts of Saints not Martyrs

Red ribbon- on Pentecost; on feasts of the passion; on feasts of the martyrs

Purple ribbon- in Advent and Lent; on Vigils of greater feasts

Black ribbon- Masses for the dead

The Priest at the altars vestments should match the color of the ribbon.

Mine always end up all over the place; I think right now I have the black ribbon in the Ordinary of the Mass, just because I never have occasion to use black for anything else (would you believe I've never been to a Requiem Mass?), and as for the rest ... I usually end up grabbing whatever ribbon is available to mark the proper of the day.

nice, but I have mine marked on the places I use most, nearest to where the ribbons attach to the spine:

Since my rc daily missal only has five ribbons (no gold), that puts me in a bind anyway (anyway).

I mark the prayers/devotions I use daily, the pre/post communion devotions, the Sunday propers, the ordinary of the Mass, and the saints/feasts propers, in that order.

it goes without saying, I suppose, that no one may care to have received the information I just imparted.

I'm the same, don't really have a "system." The red marker ended up being my "canon marker," for no apparent reason, perhaps because there is more red print there than anywhere else so I subsonsciously decided that that is where it needed to be. White marks pre-post-communion devotions, the "prayer section," purple marks the propers of the Mass, progressing throughout the year, I think I have green stuck somewhere in the back marking the proper of the saints, perhaps, and black is still folded in between the pages exactly as it came because I never have occasion to use it.

I have a system that works well for me, according to the New Marian Missal ...

The green ribbon marks propers of the Mass that are before the Mass itself. I used the yellow ribbon to mark the prefaces because I could never find them in the middle of Mass without a ribbon marking it. The red marks the ordinary of the Mass. The white marks Mass propers that are held in the section of the book after the ordinary of the Mass and the purple ribbon marks whatever devotion at the back of the missal I am using at the moment, although for a while has been marking the devotions for the Faithful departed. There is no black ribbon in the New Marian Missal.
