Would anyone plz inform me on this topic?  From what I've learned:

Catholic Bishops gathered to form the latest New Testament Canon of the Bible AD 397.  There were around 90 false letters and 10 false gospels that were kept out of the New Testament because they were written by heretical groups, like the Gnostics or were written too late to be real.

Catholic interpretation of the Bible comes from the interpretations of the Early Church Fathers.  The Early Church Fathers would know how to interpret Sacred Scripture best because they knew Christ's Apostles or they knew someone who knew Christ's Apostles or...you know what I mean: they were pretty close to the authors God wrote the Gospels and Epistles/letters through.

The Early Church Fathers were around during the time period between Christ's Ascension AD 33 and the "putting together" of the Bible.  (I say "put together" for lack of a better word.  "Assembling" the Bible wouldn't be the right word either would it?)  Even though some of the Fathers are from after the putting together of the Canon I want to focus on those from before the Canon.

Is my knowledge on this topic good so far?  If not plz feel free to correct me.

Basically, there would be no way to know what books are even part of the Bible unless an appointed Authority declared such.  Unless the Catholic Church's original statements to that effect were infallible, even the full collection from which the Prots discarded some could very well be all wrong.   They take these things for granted, but they should not - especially if the Church is the 'great deceiver' the Prots claim she is.

There's an online book at the Ecclesia Militans website.

It is called Where We Got the Bible and Our Debt to the Catholic Church.

Enjoy!

I would encourage you to read Dr. Scott Hahn's book Letter and Spirit - you will learn the way that the liturgy determined the canon of Scripture, and how the liturgy is the proper home for that canon.  Scripture and the Catholic Mass go together hand in hand, and always have from the beginning.  Any discussion of Scripture and the Canon that is separated from a discussion of the role of the liturgy is, at best, an incomplete discussion that only catches half the truth.
