We had a little "get to know you" email exchange at work today. One of the questions was what websites you frequent everyday.... I named yours truely www.fisheaters.com, and www.catholicintl.com, as well as www.ladiesagainstfeminism.com. A friend at work approached me and told me that he didn't realize I was such a devout Catholic and preceded to tell me all of his bones to pick with the church. It all seemed to boil down to one conversation with a priest where the priest told him his marriage (to a crazy baptist woman) was invalid and that his son was a bastard. Now, this gentleman goes on and on about his crazy EX wife, and how miserable his life is... so my response was something like.. well, maybe the priest knew what he was talking about. It was kind of a thoughtless response.. and I think I'll approach him tomorrow that I'm sorry a priest spoke to him in such a way. But why do "serious, devout" catholics have to take crap for everything any priest has ever said to anyone? I'm tired of people taking the opportunity to bash Catholicism whenever they find out that I'm so "into" it. |

Wow. Fluffy=1, people who have "bones" to pick with the Catholic Church=0.
I've met those people before. I really wish I would have been as strong as you to say what you did, because its the truth. We are who we are and since other religions don't seem to have a problem being open about it, we shouldn't either.

I wasn't there (obviously) and I don't know the particulars, but I find occasions like those, an opportunity. The best you can do, I think, is just listen. He needs to vent?... fine let him. Just listen and show him respect. Once he's done, he should likewise show you the same respect. From there on you can engage in more serious discussions. He came to you with griviences. Those will be there until he's had a chance to get over them. You just might be the one to help him get over it. Who knows what can happen after. Just my 2 cents. |

Yea, I think I'll go and apologize for the priest's comments tomorrow. I said something about how people shouldn't let their grievances with the church / or with priests get in the way. I think I'll expound on that a bit. I mean, we go to church to worship God, not to worship priests. It's fine to have a bone to pick with a priest, but it's no reason to leave God behind.
He's a good man, been through alot, and I think he feels guilty that he is no longer the devout Catholic he was raised to be.

miss_fluffy, just define what antiSemititsm IS and ISN'T. People should understand what you mean. We don't oppose Jewish "race", we oppose Jewish religious beliefs.
Much the same way many people oppose Catholic religious beliefs or Muslim religious beliefs or any other religion's beliefs.
Opposing the Jewish religion isn't antiSemitism, because most Jews aren't even Semites. It's that simple miss_fluffy.
EDIT
Explain WHY the priest said what he said. A big reason most Catholics that have fallen away or are ignorant of their beliefs is because they don't realize the Catholic Church IS the one true religion. And even if you tell him that, you should explain HOW the Catholic Church is the only real religion.

I heard a line once ... we should not apologise to people for being Catholic, if anything, they should apologise to us for not being Catholic. I don't see what there is to apologise about what the priest said, except perhaps if he did it in an uncharitable way, but if this gentleman was invalidly married, then his child is a bastard, I am sorry to say. |

At the end of the day, there's a lot of people out there who require very little to justify their pleasing themselves ahead of God. My sister is 35 and still bitches about some nun giving her grief in grade 9. My father was scandalised by the fact that I would dare to put God first even ahead of my own family. The fact that it is for their own good doesn't come in to it. So that's it, I can have my Catholic Faith. their not interested. This cenario isn't your fault in the least Miss Fluffy. This person wants you to do it all for him, like the Church owes him. |
