Knights Of Our Lady
WHAT IS THE ORDER?…A Brief History
The Order of the Knights of Our Lady; Observance of the Holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary, was established in l945 by a young Dom Lafond, who soon thereafter became a Benedictine Monk. The Order received approbation and canonical acceptance by various diocese, and was based on those of the Middle Ages – Knight Templars and Hospitallers. The Rule, manner of conduct and most importantly, it’s “raison-d’etre”, are profoundly concerned with the restoration of Christ in His rightful place as King of all nations.
After a meteoric expansion and success in the fight against Communism and Liberalism, the events of Vatican Council ll produced a split in the Order. The Conservative element eventually regrouped, after much procrastination, and a search for the strong leadership required. Even then the Knights of Our Lady wasn’t properly recognized until l989.Our present Master, Mr. LeRoy, is one of those who reformed the Order.
WHY ARE MEMBERS CALLED SQUIRES AND KNIGHTS?
The Church has often called its members to active missions in its long history. Knighthood in its true sense is the benediction (blessing) given to men who are prepared to follow a strict regime of loyalty to Traditions and are able and willing to fight for Holy Mother Church in every manner to achieve the end of its mission. Today’s Knights of Our Lady are no different to those of the Military Orders of the Middle Ages, except that we are not celibate, and use less forceful means to combat the enemies of Christ. We do, however, vow to fight to the shedding of blood if the Church calls us to such action.
HOW DO I DECIDE IF THIS IS FOR ME?
Easy…come to our monthly meetings, held on the first Friday of each month , at the St. Thomas Aquinas College in Tynong, we start after evening Mass. This will give you the opportunity to observe how the program in conducted and you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, etc.
I LIKE THE CONCEPT BUT IT’S TOO DEMANDING!
If you like the aims of the Order, and feel you’d like to support it, consider joining one of the support groups;
1. Auxilliary: help when you can spiritually, physically or financially
2. Friends of the Order: as a benefactor.
3. Spiritual Corp: religious.
Orders who pray and sacrifice become the “fuel” for the fight. All members of the above categories receive the regular bulletin detailing all events and activities both here and in New Zealand, the Philippines, and overseas. The first two category members are required to contribute a minimum of $50 per year to help defray the costs of the Order.
IF I JOIN, WHAT’S REQUIRED?
Attendance of the monthly meetings which involve prayer, study, and planning of activities. These also provide a mutual support to each other as we all struggle with the challenges of aiming to live almost heroic Catholic lives. Approximately half an hour daily is required for prayers, meditation and readings. Attendance of at least one weekly mass is required, and a regular study of a devotional program. For the active community work, our efforts at present involve the running of the Pages and Cadets program.
WHAT ARE THE PAGES AND CADETS?
Boys from the ages of 8 to l2 (Cadets) and 12 to l8 (Pages) attend monthly meetings where they learn the History of the Church (Knighthood),liturgy, chivalry and a variety of skills that include; bushcraft, mechanics, sports and obstacles courses , all designed to fine tune both the mind and body. Those chosen to join are expected to conduct themselves in an exemplary manner in public. The ultimate aim is to encourage the Cadets to progress through the ten year program to become Pages, Squires, Donats, then eventually Knights in the Order.
