Author Topic: Do the laity have a mission?  (Read 1037 times)

It seems to me that the involvement of laity within the church has greatly increased over the last century compared to what it used to be.  So do the laity have a mission? and have they always had this mission or has it only been given recently?

To raise children and spread the faith with heartfelt devotion.

This may or may not be what you're looking for, but your post reminded  me of a certain Mahoney remark that was floating around the blogosphere  a while back...

What some refer to as a "vocations crisis" is, rather, one of the many  fruits of the Second Vatican Council, a sign of God's deep love for the  Church,  and an invitation to a more creative and effective ordering of the  gifts and energy in the Body of Christ. This is a time of great  challenge and opportunity in the Church, not least of all because the  gifts of the lay faithful have been flourishing in unprecedented  numbers and in unforeseen ways.

  Enjoy!

In addition to to the above to support the priest and parish but not to try to take over those functions which properly are the priest's or, as the late Michael Davies might have said, fall within the "privilege of the ordained".

This Mahoney character sounds a complete nut case.

Not being in the US I can't speak from personal experience but the cover photo of Michael Davies's Liturgical Timbombs in Vatican II certainly supports the case for insanity.

Which, properly understood, is one of the good points of Vatican II. The laity are to go out and spread the Gospel through their vocations as parents and whatever career they might have, whereas the clergy tend to the spiritual matters of the parish. Unfortunately, the laity have begun running the parishes, too, another modernist use of the Council.

In other words the laity should try to lead good Catholic lives so that  by their example might convert others and should also stop trying to elbow Father out of the Sanctuary.

I think at this point the laity's vocation is to restore the priesthood to its rightful place as a sacrificial priesthood concerned with the salvation of souls instead of a rabbninical-Protestant one concerned with being loved by the world.

But, I could be wrong.
