Does the Catholic Church teach the concept of desecration? I know that to desecrate the Holy Eucharist warrants automatic excommunication, but can other things be desecrated? I have always refrained from putting books such as Harry Potter in such a position that they would touch a Bible, for example. However, here is the situation. Before I started attending the Traditional Mass offered by the SSPX, I looked up porn on my home computer (I'm pretty sure I never saved any porn to the hard disk). I have since repented of such vile acts, and have no wish to commit them again. However, is my home computer 'desecrated' by having been used to look that stuff up? Recently, I bought a laptop, and I transfered files from my home computer to my laptop. Since there was porn on the home computer, have I desecrated my laptop? Is anything I produce on it also desecrated? Should I get a priest to bless it?

No, you are being scrupulous. Desecration occurs to a sacred object. A computer is not a sacred object. Pornography is not a cursed object which is another way desecration may occur. Unless you have a collection of Playboys that were used in some Voodoo ritual. IMO, Harry Potter will not desecrate a Bible. But if you feel that it might, why is it in your house to begin with?

Does the Catholic Church teach the concept of desecration? Yes, but things that haven't been consecrated can't be desecrated. It's a good idea to have a priest bless your home and everything in it, including computers. However, material objects with no sacred character don't get damaged or defiled, much less desecrated, by human actions that don't materially change the objects. I'd say don't worry about it; defilement and desecration come from within a man, not from his machines, any more than from his food. Blessings, Don McMaster

And I'd certainly deliberate carefully about dousing the home computer with holy water.

Short of reformatting your hard drive which will clean and wipe all traces in it, there's a program called "Window Washer" that does the same thing except delete the operating system.

Being scrupulous is what some of us are. I have battled it myself. I'd say ditch the Rowlings books, don't worry about the computere and the sins you have had forgiven in confession. The scruples smokescreen the Harry Potter. The SSPX have a number of good articles about the Rowlings series.

I don't think something can become desecrated by touching an unChristian thing.
The Jews had a ritual uncleanliness thing in the Bible, is that what you're talking about?

I think youre definitely being overscrupulous...not that thats surprising, if your first touch with traditionalism was sspx, but, i wouldnt worry...

Perhaps 'defiled' is the word I should have used. If I were to change 'desecrate' with 'defile' in the original question, would it make any difference? I remember reading in the Old Testament that if a man touched something unclean (semen, blood, a dead person or animal I think were some of the things) then he would be defiled and have to remain outside the camp until nightfall. Pornography involves those sorts of disgusting, unclean acts, so would not looking at it on a computer defile the computer like touching semen did in the OT? And talking about desecration, what if a Bible, Missal or other holy book that had been blessed by a priest was in the same room where two people committed fornication or other sins of the flesh? Would the act desecrate everything holy that was in the room?
