I know that smoking kills you, so wouldn't it be a sin to smoke, since you are slowly killing yourself?
Actually, peer reviewed, juried articles in such journals as the Lancet and New England Journal of Medicine have shown the health benefits of smoking! Alzeheimer's is statistically much, much lower amongst smokers, prostate cancer in men and endometrial cancer in women is much lower in smokers, etc. Of course this is hidden information because the anti-smokers will never mention it and if the tobacco companies do, the FDA says, "Gotcha! You claimed an health benefit! Now, we can regulate you!"

I smoke a pipe. I have a few pipes: three churchwardens and maybe five or six short-stemmed pipes. No Meerschaums. I enjoy Hazelnut flavoured tobacco as well as rum & maple. A very nice way to relax, with a cup of coffee or tea in front of a roaring fire. Pax vobiscum, Geoff

I love my cigars, but I have to admit that when I get a GOOD cigar (they are very uneven in smoking quality, so can't be sure what you're always buying) I inhale them. I love the nicotine effect, even though I know that it and the tars, etc., are not good for me. I also put pieces of cigar tobacco in my tea when I brew it. The nicotine effect is better than marijuana, in my opinion, since it helps me concentrate and MJ just seems to give me a "roller-coaster," nauseating ride. But, I'm old (61), so maybe that accounts for the preference. Fr. John Corapi said on EWTN this AM that smoking was slow suicide and therefore a major sin, or something like that. I don't know---maybe I do have suicidal tendencies (I have attempted it in the past), but I don't associate smoking cigars with that feeling.

The guys on EWTN say boxing is a mortal sin even though the CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) used to teach boxing to kids to keep them off the streets. I've also seen them say that auto racing is sinful because of the risk for entertainment purposes. Personally, I think they need to lighten up on that stuff and concentrate more on preaching the basic Ten Commandments. And if boxing is sinful, the Ultimate Fighting I watch must be the 8th Deadly Sin.

Jonette, I think it was (but someone anyway) also said that the old Christian song, "Amazing Grace," was also bad, because it states that people are saved "the hour [they] first believed," i.e., without baptism. I don't know how "baptism" would rhyme with the verses of the song (of which there are originally 24), but that's a bit of a stretch to me. Got to get that song out of all the good Catholic song books right away!

[/QUOTE] Hymns which are about non-Catholic doctrines (in this case, Once Saved, Always Saved) shouldn't be sung in Catholic churches. We even have "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God", the hymn of the Reformation, written by Martin Luther, as an official part of the Catholic liturgy - it's in the Liturgy of the Hours. More on topics, I think Catholic can disagree on whether these activities are sinful. It is sinful to damage one's body or risk one's life unnecessarily, as a kind of lesser sin falling under the fifth Commandment, but everything has some degree of risk to it. Pope Pius X smoked cigars, and he's now a saint.

The soul is a breath of living spirit, that with excellent sensitivity, permeates the entire body to give it life. Just so, the breath of the air makes the earth fruitful. Thus the air is the soul of the earth, moistening it, greening it.
