My thoughts of the day.

It takes some effort setting aside chores and work to smoke a bowl sometimes...And this is the great thing about pipe-smoking, that you are forced to really focus on the experience. I don't know how some people find the time or, quite frankly, even enjoy smoking several bowls a day (such people are those putting themselves at immediate risk for oral cancer).

Its almost as if the hobby itself refuses to be taken for granted, used trivially, and abused. Like baking your own bread, eating what you kneed, so too, when you smoke a pipe you taste and smell what you pack and light. It is ritual (like the liturgy) and recipe (like bread aforementioned), and when either are done improperly, negative consequences ensue. In the case of pipe tobacco, it might burn too hot if packed hastily (thus tightly) and the smoke will be harsh and unpleasant. Coupled with constant exposure, this hot smoke invites oral health problems! Unfortunate, but avoidable are these results if one engages in smoking a pipe confidently but not stupidly. As a result, moreover, pipe-smoking disciplines you in moderation, as well as patience and commitment, almost by the very action.

In order to really find satisfaction in pipe-smoking, and I am simply speaking from my own taste and experience, you really only should want to enjoy a bowl one to three times a week - at least I do.

had a hard time switching from cigarettes to pipes.  Although I enjoyed the experience of the pipe in and of itself - I would always end up just smoking a cigarette right after to get my nicotine "fix."  I was ultimately able to give up the cigs by using snus/dip as a weaning substitute.

The oral cancer risk for modern moist snuff products is substantially less than smoking, and I've found weaning from chewing tobacco a much easier process.

That said, I broke out the pipes this weekend and am looking forward to being able to enjoy a bowl or two throughout the week.

Regards,
Bob

now on week 3 without cigarettes,  for the first ten days a pouch of pipe tobacco was lasting me two days not really an improvement now it lasts five and I honestly don't miss the cigarettes, now when I can get myself down to two bowls a day I'll be content.

Dear All,

That young Fridayer is wise far beyond his years.

And young Baskerville  makes his points very well.

I could not have said it better.

We are truly blessed that they are "Brothers of the Briar"

with apologies to Will S

"We few, we happy few, we Brothers of the Briar;
For he to-day that smokes his pipe with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen at Fish Eaters now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their cigarettes cheap whiles any speaks
That smoked a pipe with us upon Saint Crispin's day."

I'm new here (as a member anyway!) just popping in here to say I've smoked a pipe for about 14 years now and how wonderful to find a pipe smoking thread on a catholic website.

For the sake of information I smoke Peterson pipe's and have about 8 of them but only regularly use two of them. They are two that use Dr Perl 9mm filters. I've tried different blends but find I am most comfortable with the mass-produced "Mellow Virginia" - so I'm not a connoisseur but good to be here as a "Brother of the Briar" (priceless!) or, given my usual blend - a cousin at least

Welcome Super

It is wonderful to have you with us. No doubt your experience and wisdom will be a wonderful addition to the variety of information, suggestions, recommendations, questions and resources that this wonderful thread has produced over just a few short months.

As you alluded to: it is wonderful to find a site where gentlemen who are serious about their Catholic Faith can also share their enthusiasm for the enjoyment of a pipe in a natural and supportive family setting. It has been fun to watch as gentlemen like you have stepped forward "one by one" to share their insights and be supportive of new and younger fellows who would like to give smoking a pipe a try.

One question that is always interesting is what drew you to start smoking a pipe? Any role models or examples in your life that helped to inspire you to start?

Thanks for the welcome!
I was born old  and started smoking cigars occasionally when I was 16 by about 8 years later I was smoking a pack of panatella's a day. One evening, around finals time, I was sitting dazed, feeling ill with an agonizing headache I looked in my bin and had smoked three packets of cigars in an afternoon!
The following day I went and bought my first pipe and the rest is history. I still smoke cigarillos when I am out and about but my pipe is my constant companion indoors. I think its a hobby as much as a habit with all the fiddling and cleaning and tamping it involves (at least that's what I tell myself!)
