Well, my wife asked me what I wanted for my birthday, and I requested a pipe...She didn't seem too positive about it. :(

Dear Marty,

That is a wonderful first step. Do not be discouraged. Give her a little time and she will recognize the value of a good pipe to a man. It can be a very relaxing and contemplative friend. Often when the air is filled with the sweet aroma of a nice aromatic tobacco friends and family have great memories of a pipe smoker in their family. The important thing is to get a good pipe and some good tobacco to start with. Avoid the cheap pipe and drugstore tobacco, you will have a much better experience and stand a much better chance of developing a lifetime hobby. Savinelli makes a great pipe at a reasonable price and they should be available in Australia. McClellands makes a wonderful blend called Georgian Creme if it is available down under. There have to be some local resources for you also in Australia.

This is true. Whenever I go over to the folk's house my mother hates it when I smoke ciggarettes, but doesn't mind at all when I smoke my pipe there. In fact she rather likes the aromatic scent of pipe smoke.

And you're quite right about the memories, my grandfather smoked a pipe and whenever I smell the scent of that tobbacco I have incredibley fond memories of both my grandparents and the wonderful times I sent at their home when I was young.

Dear Marylou,

I do  know something about wives, since I have had the same one for about 25 years and she is the mother of our children. She doesn't enjoy the smell of pipe smoke etc. So I am respectful and enjoy my occassional pipe outside. However, she does recongize that my occassional pipe with coffee or after dinner, is a wonderful moment in my week when I can relax, reflect and contemplate. I have several friends, all good family men, with pretty traditional values and a good foundation in the Faith, who also enjoy an occassional pipe. Sometimes we get together for a bowl and talk about our lives and families etc.  Most of their wives are supportive of their participation in the hobby and in fact see it as an opportunity for their husbands to carve out a tiny sliver of time for themselves from their daily routine of work, family and community activities.

In 1999, my wife and her sisters toured Europe for 2 weeks including Rome and the Vatican while "the guys" stayed home and keep house and kids going. It was a wonderful trip for them. When she returned she presented me with a beautiful Savinelli bent pipe purchased in Italy. As she said, "Well this is not something that I like, but I knew that you would enjoy it."

It is a wonderful pipe, but more importantly it is something that I treasure each time that I smoke it.

She once told me."She didn't marry to make herself happy, she married to make me happy." The pipe is one wonderful example of that.

So while almost all of my time is devoted to work, home, children, community and wife, I do get some time to enjoy an occassional pipe alone or with friends. It is always a chance to reflect on my many blessings before I ask God for more.

So I hope that you will give Marty his chance too. He sounds like a very sincere and solid young man. If he were to get a good Boswell pipe and some good aromatic tobacco he might really enjoy it. He might learn how to produce that wonderful aroma that so many people seem to have such fond memories of....and one of his great memories would be of your generosity.
