I am the mother and worse still the mother-in-law to the wife who (so far) will not agree to a pipe. Espear, Your wife sounds as delightful as Marty's wife. I am visiting Italy next year and will seek out such a pipe for Marty but I may have to hide it here for a few years !! I am sure that in time Marty's DH will come around.

As a non-smoker, I am curious about the pipe. It does seem to be a manly image, but I wonder why. What makes pipe smoking attractive? Isn't there still the risk of lung cancer and nicotine addiction involved?
I am honestly curious, as I've always found the idea of a pipe appealing, but in a sort of idealized way.

Dear Matusleo,
Ah.....you ask the great and "often asked" question. Why does one smoke a pipe? Usually it is for many reasons. Often you have wonderful memories of a gentleman in your life who inspired you. An aroma that reminds you of a grandfather, father, uncle or friend. Sometimes you see it as an opportunity to enjoy something that is primarily reserved for the "mature gentleman". Very often, if you try it and have a good experience, you realize that it is a wonderful, contemplative opportunity in today's "never stop" world. It is 45 minutes or so when you can just sit with a warm pipe, enjoy the aroma and taste of a pleasant tobacco and let your mind unwind. The experience includes the feel of the pipe in your hand, appreciating the art work of the wood, the packing and lighting rituals and the slow, patient rhythmic puffing that makes for a relaxing smoke. If done correctly under the right conditions, it can be a deeply relaxing and mind clearing experience. Health risks for the "occasional pipe smoker" seem to be pretty minimal and many fellows report that the stress reduction and relaxation that they gain while smoking their pipes gives them renewed energy and helps to keep them centered upon the more important things of life.
If you have not tried a good pipe with a good tobacco, it is something that you owe to yourself at least once. It can provide a lifetime of enjoyment.

Hmm, I confess that there is a nice store in the mall nearby which sells pipes. I've always liked to go in and admire them. I hate cigarettes and I hate cigars, but the thought of seeing somebody smoking a pipe has never bothered me. A part of me likes seeing it. There's something more traditional and refined about it. Still, I'd have no idea what makes for a good tobacco, or what to do with it if I had it! but thank you for the reply, ESpear! One day I may give it a try. :-) Dominus vobiscum

Quit the pipe-smoking stuff, pleeeease....
Real men smoke cigars, but not too often, as our health should be a major concern of ours too.
Pipe-smoking is véry unhealthy.

I just bought myself a Savinelli Church Warden today. I'll take pictures of it and post them here as soon as I find some time.

Dear Kenny, Do you have other Savinellis already? I have several and they make wonderful pipes once they are broken in. If you like a churchwarden, take a look at the mini-ball pipes that JM Boswell makes. http://www.boswellpipes.com/MinieBall.htmHe takes great brier and carves it into the shape of a civil war mini ball. They are not just "props" They are wonderful pipes to smoke. I have one and use it often. We will look forward to the photos of your churchwarden. E. Spear

Here's the Mini Ball Mr. Spear was speaking of. What a beautiful pipe, I'll have to show it to my husband. My dh smokes a churchwarden by Stanwell, a Hans Christian Andersen. He loves it, it's his favourite pipe. A real cool, smooth smoke.

The soul is a breath of living spirit, that with excellent sensitivity, permeates the entire body to give it life. Just so, the breath of the air makes the earth fruitful. Thus the air is the soul of the earth, moistening it, greening it.
