Why did you bite you tongue? I must say being brought up in Norway we have learned in school that smoking is very dangerous, and will lead to all kinds of terrible things.

Why should I doubt what skilled doctors have to say about smoking?

Well, when one talks about tounge bite, one doesnt really mean that one bites ones tounge, but that the smoke is so warn that you feel a stinging sensation on your tounge.

Well, Smoking is unhealthy, there is no getting around it. Smoking pipe on the other hand is far less unhealthy than smoking sigarets, since you actually dont inhale the smoke.

I dont think that should stop you, as one doesnt stop to eat fast food, candy or sorda, just because we know its unhealthy. And I really see no significant difference between smoking a pipe every other day, then drinking a lot of coke, or eating at mcdonalds.

What sort of tobacco might a connoisseur enjoy?

My dad's planning to buy a special gift for a pipe smoking colleague and as a non-smoker hasn't any idea of what sort of thing would be suitable.

I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

Behold, I make all things new.

Dear Loggats,

Now...... that is a question with more answers than there are fish in the sea

But it could generate some interesting responses here and I look forward to them.

You see Loggats, every pipe smoker has his own taste in tobacco. He usually has a blend or blends that he tends to favor.

There are three large groups of tobacco blends: the "aromatics" that are flavored with something like a fruit flavor, the "virginias and burleys" which are more natural and the "English" blends which usually have a small or larger percentage of latakia tobacco, which adds a spicy quality to it. Each has their own wonderful qualities and each has its devotees

In order for your dad to be close, if would be helpful to find out some of the blends that his friend smokes now...then we could chime in with some suggestions

And what is the proper hat?  You don't see too many men wearing hats anymore.  It just isn't fashionable the way it once was.

BTW, I've had my second bowl, and I still like it.  Now if I could get rid of this irritating cold, I'd have my third!

Will do: I had no idea it was quite such an art

Dear Loggats,

You know, it really is an art.

There is the "art of making the pipe", the "art of the blending of the tobacco" and the "art of smoking the pipe". Together they create an experience ...an experience similar to looking at a beautiful painting, tasting a great wine or reading great poetry. There are endless combinations and endless experiences awaiting those who seek the contemplation and have the patience to learn the skills.
