The other thing I didn't like about the film, besides the continual blaspheming, was the depiction of Max Baer as vicious and sadistic. I guess this was done to add conflict and drama, but it is slanderous. Baer once killed a man in the ring, and after that he had no killer instinct, in fact he often seemed to pull his punches as if he didn't want to hurt his opponent. Max had great natural talent but he had no love for fighting or hurting other people.

 

None of this takes anything away from Braddock's victory. This is a story that was not improved by Hollywood; big surprise.

Ron Howard, the director of this film, plus Tom Hanks, Ian McClellan, and a host of others, are anathema in my household.  They couldn't even pay me to go and watch their films.
