In a way -- and please note that I'm only thinking out loud here, not  making any sort of position statement -- an argument could be made that  traditionalists would be better off had there been no indult at  all.  If the traditional Mass were made, in a sense, only the  property of those who are absolutely committed to preserving tradition,  it might actually protect the traditional rite.  It would prevent  the nonsense that has already been mentioned like communion in the hand  and use of the new calendar.  Also, it would help unite  traditionalists, as there would be one less option, and there might be  less in-fighting over Indult vs. SSPX vs. Independent vs. Sedevacantist  vs. Whatever.  Remember, Catholics who attend, say, an SSPX chapel  simply for the sake of going to the old Mass are not schismatics.   Rome has already spoken on that.

I am pretty sure Cardinal Ratzinger had a say in Pope John Paul II's  motu proprio ecclesia dei, and I have a feeling that his own motu  proprio would offer the same canonical protection to the rite.  At  least, we can only hope.

  I have never seen or heard of an indult mass directly which used the  new calander.  If I ever encountered one, I would certainly  complain as much as possible.  Though, of course, the pre-1962  second confiteor as part of the preparation for communion I have seen  at my indult... and that also technically breaks the ecclesia dei  indult... but I stay silent about that Smile

When I wish to solve those problems, which perplex the wisest men,
And deduce abstruse conclusions, that transcend all human ken;
When I wish to know the secrets which the pyramids infold,
Or to understand the statecraft of Rameses Great of Old,
I just sit here quiet and easy, and all things seem clear as day,
When I see the smoke a-curling from my pipe of Irish clay.

  Yes, but without an indult or the FSSP, anyone who does not have access to an SSPX chapel would be out in the cold.

I  can't speak for every indult, but I've been to 4 separate TLM indults  multiple times, and each one did things by the liturgical books without  a wiff of modernist syncretism to speak of.

  1.  Of course you're right.  It's better than nothing.   But how do you know some of those FSSP or indult priests wouldn't be  SSPX?  Anyway, I'm not saying ppl who have nothing but an indult  available shouldn't go to the indult.  I'm glad the traditional  Mass is available.

  2. I've seen good indults, as well.  But I do know some bad ones exist.

I have seen it an at SSPX Mass and I thought they used the 1962 Missal.  Don't they?

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in the hour of conflict.  Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.  May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do though, O prince of the Heavenly host, thrust Satan down to hell and with him all the wicked spirits that wander through the world for the ruin of souls.

Our Indult priest uses the Traditional Calendar. We have Mass once a month on First Saturday, and we normally have a Mass of Our Lady (unless another feast occurs on the day, such as the Precious Blood). Next month's Mass will be a Requiem Mass.
However, he wears modern vestments, which I find annoying. He uses the modern chasuble, not the Roman or 'fiddle-back' one (but he is over 70 and the Roman chasuble is very heavy). But he also wears the stole straight down (not crossed over the chest), and leaves the maniple out altogether (he says that it was originally a handkerchief and so there is no use in wearing it)

And the chasuble was originally a cloak for out of doors, so why does he bother wearing it?
