Perhaps you can look into working in a pharmacy at a Catholic hospital or in the Catholic medical system, but that is not 100% safe as sometimes birth control is still distributed. At the very least, they should accomodate you.

That's true.  I did work in a Catholic hospital when I was in school.  They did still distribute birth control, but I think you are right that had I asked, the hospital and the patients would have had to accommodate.  My employer has been trying to accommodate me and my fellow employees have been supportive. I just dread confrontations with angry customers.

That is too bad the "Catholic" hospital gives out birth control.  There you have the diocese, hospital ethics board, and Ethical and Religious Directives for Health Care Institutions to go to.  http://www.nccbuscc.org/bishops/directives.shtml#partfour

I was thinking of your situation today. If your husband is the primary breadwinner, perhaps you can go an alternative path and provide pharmacy services that dont involve birth control like medical missions.

It is a privilege to live in these modern times, as Pope Pius XII said, and you have a great opportunity to show the Catholic teaching on birth control!

God bless! St. Cosmos and Damian, patron saints of health care workers, pray for us!

I was very impressed with your attempt to live the Catholic life --- even before you are Catholic. I applaud your efforts.

One suggestion:

Would it be possible for you to say to the customer that unfortunately you do not have that pill on-hand at the moment, but that you will have more tomorrow? I know it is a bit misleading but might be morally OK, considering you are avoiding a worse sin.

Do you think that a customer would be OK with that response? As often stores run out of products and don't have extras in stock.

Perhaps this grub would like to explain his own actions to the tv camera when it shows up?

The support on this forum and from my fellow parishioners has been a great encouragement to me.  Yesterday Planned Parenthood faxed in a prescription for a 17 year old girl for the "morning-after pill", birth control pills, condoms and lubricant-all to be paid for by the state of California, even the lubricant.  I didn't fill the prescriptions, but she will probably get them today from the other pharmacist anyway.

When I got home last night, we had received a mailing from Planned Parenthood requesting donations for their initiative to have the large chain pharmacies adopt policies preventing pharmacists from refusing to fill birth control prescriptions!  The company I work for, Rite Aid, was listed as having changed their policy in October in response to Planned Parenthood.  It seems my supervisor is unaware of this policy-if it is true.  I feel like I don't want to resign and let Planned Parenthood push all Catholic pharmacists out of their jobs in retail pharmacies, but I'm not sure if I can get fired for not conforming to a new company policy because of religious reasons. I am more confused than ever. It is a sad state things are in now. I know first hand all this "reproductive freedom" Planned Parenthood is fighting so hard for is damaging the teenagers and women they are claiming to protect.

Your situation might be a very good case to be covered by the local news or even larger news organizations, if you feel called to fight this.

Maybe Pharmacists for Life can lead this battle for you.

Also in California (Sacramento, in your neck of the woods)

Do you have a conscience clause?  Have you taken the Hippocratic Oath?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippocratic_Oath  (you can insert Christ for the gods, and swear before a priest, get a generic certificate you fill out with the priest)

Im very interested in your situation. Please keep us posted!

Unfortunately things have not worked out with this situation in my job.  I have have had to give my notice.

Please pray for me that I can find another job that does not involve my cooperation in these un-Catholic activities.
