How would I go about organizing a Latin Mass society at my secular campus? I would want it to be seperate from the Campus Ministries.... but I would want the Church's "OK."

I was thinking after the MP comes out...  I could write the Bishop and tell him how there is a group of more traditional minded students here and that we would like to form a group for the preservation of the Latin Mass, making it more accesible to students who are interested in it. We would have meetings, and share in traditional Catholic practices, and go to Mass together. Could I just write a letter on the groups behalf asking for his blessing and simply letting him know of our presence?

I know this wouldn't "have to" have a Bishop's rubber stamp of approval, but it would certainly help since the Campus Ministry does not seem to like us, at all, and some students would be hesitant to join a group that the people in charge detest. I can just see them now being furious at us for disseminating flyers, posters etc.

Just wondering what type of college your at. there are probably guidlines for groups. maybe there is a local society that you could affiliate with  and bring them on. a priestly society like SSPX or FSSP probably wouldnt work well but maybe Una Voce or a local Latin community would help. Good luck..this project sounds fun

Righto CR this is good.
The first thing you MUST do is get the campus to give the 'OK'. Throw the ball back into their court.
Form a society, even if you are the only member, you must be able to use it as a means to fall back on if things don't go your way.
The excuse of 'I'll go back to the society and ask them what they think' sends shivers down the spine of anyone in control of a religious area such as this. Never disclose the amount of members, but always make it sound like a lot.
Make a flier quoting popes especially JPII, use nice religious pictures and make it known that you support Bishop dimwit, even if you don't. You must be seen as being proactive within the campus/diocese level. If you ever see anything that belongs to a trad Church being thrown away, grab it. Befriend the priests, ask them to say your Mass. Always throw it back to those in control.
The society I founded here has had a lot of success with the local Church dignitaries because we are a known 'society', but no one knows who or how many we are, we are just the 'Wang Latin Mass people'. Heck it could just be me, but at least there is a movement within the Parish to restore the Latin Mass back to where it should be, and at the end of the day, that's your goal.
Go get em mate.

I think Marty's right; set it up through the university if you can. At my university you need a minimum of fifteen people to become a student union group, but you can just get a lot of your friends to sign the sheet saying they would like this club to exist. Then they give you webspace and sometimes even funding, and you can use their copier for flyers, etc...

Yup..check with the college first on what is required.  You probably dont want to compete with the Neuman Center. It is probably best to find out the schools guidelines. After that and you get set up...You may want to discuss with the Neuman center about maybe using their chapel for devotions or meetings or even a Trad Mass availablility.

I highly doubt the Neumann Center crowd would allow the Mass. And even if they did, it wouldn't be a proper facility to use. (banners about poverty and political action hardly raise ones mind and heart to god if ya know what I mean). If you get the ok, you might be able to find a hospital chapel or something thats more suited.

Well, there is not a Neuman center, however the campus ministries would not favor it at all. There is a local church which WILL have it the day the Motu Proprio comes out.... (Please God, let it be soon) That Church is only a 15-20 minute drive away. I need to approach those priests about offering a private mass.... though they are very busy with parish duties.

I want to be able to propagate information, and look official, without the stigma of being labeled disobedient. That would do more than stunt growth, it would kill it. However I see the good of being approved first through the school....

So what ministries on Campus would give you a hard time? I know our center here has a small chapel. But a local parish , friendly to a latin Mass society and the TLM would be great. If the Priest are traditional...they may be a great resource for you.
