As a vegetarian, is there a standard for which foods one should abstain from on days when it is proscribed? I don't eat fish, so I've been told a couple times to, "just give up something else". This seems a little ad-hoc to me, so I'd just like to find out if there is a standard within the church, given the number of vegetarian monastic orders.

Is there a particular vegetarian dish you crave or enjoy eating?  You can give that up.  Also you can give up coffee you're a coffee drinker.  There are many ways.  The rule of abstinence is not limited to no-meat-on-Fridays and other designated days.

Eastern Christians abstain from all animal-derived products (including eggs and dairy products) on certain days.  You might try that.

Interesting... I was not aware there were any vegetarian monastic orders

I might be confusing "order" with some other term - I know that many Trappists are vegetarians, as were the original Benedictines, Franciscans, and Carmelites.

You could always fast on fridays as well, since you already abstain.

Believe nothing just because a so-called wise person said it. Believe nothing just because a belief is generally held. Believe nothing just because it is said in ancient books. Believe nothing just because it is said to be of divine origin. Believe nothing just because someone else believes it. Believe only what you yourself test and judge to be true.– Buddha

Note: According to this precept, I find that Buddhism is NOT true.  I have tested and judged many things, and the only Truth I have found is in God's One True Church: The Catholic Church.

I do know that some of the brothers from the Redemptorists (traditional Roman Catholic, affiliated with SSPX) at Papa Stronsay, Scotland, abstain from meat and meat-derived products all year out of penitence (and possibly some because they like animals too much and can't stand eating meat...?)

I say, give up the soy anyway because it's a dangerous poison especially tofu. Who want to eat someone's toe fu anyway?

I guess that would be "Vegan Fridays" for our vegetarian friend. Smile
