There are several billion people around the world who'll either go to be hungry tonight or worrying about whether they have enough to fed their family for the rest of the week. This is very, very true. Our minds are terribly corrupted if we have come to caring about what our fat bellies (or other people's fat bellies) look like on the outside. It's not corrupt to be concerned with our appearance, within reason of course. Get a life why don't you? Wake up, smell the coffee and understand what is going on with the rest of humanity.
Who are you addressing?

I've always had a double chin, one that I don't think would magically disappear if I lost a bunch of weight. I think it will sag down as I age, just like my grandmother and my father.
I'd be real tempted to fix it, if it didn't require knocking me out (I react badly to anesthesia). And of course, if the cost was minimal. It would all depend on if I had a hubby, and if he reassured me. If I got plenty of reassurance that I look great, I wouldn't even be tempted.
But being out in the market, looking for a man, I can't blame women for going through great lengths to improve their looks.

Believe nothing just because a so-called wise person said it. Believe nothing just because a belief is generally held. Believe nothing just because it is said in ancient books. Believe nothing just because it is said to be of divine origin. Believe nothing just because someone else believes it. Believe only what you yourself test and judge to be true.– Buddha
Note: According to this precept, I find that Buddhism is NOT true. I have tested and judged many things, and the only Truth I have found is in God's One True Church: The Catholic Church.
Dear Lord, I know I can live by Your Holy Will every moment of my life, because You have given me faith that Your Grace will enable me to.

So, the decision to undergo elective cosmetic surgery is objectively more serious than the decision to wear make-up. Thus, the anticipated benefit should be greater, in order to maintain a due proportion between risk and benefit. Besides risks of complications, which are always present, even in routine procedures, the cost of the procedure has to be weighed. A tube of lipstick certainly costs much less than a facelift, and I would say achieves a lot more for the risk/cost involved. You got a point there. Like I said earlier, what I would get would depend on such things as pain, recovery time and the risk of complications.

Are you talking about my post? I was trying to be light and flippant (once I moved on from the "Swan" show), so I hope not. Where's that chill pill people were posting and passing around? I think we're in need of it.

. I was watching a show about a woman who had sextuplets and her tummy was ten times worse than your normal after-baby sag. She had to wear a sort of girdle to keep it in. :( A plastic surgeon's wife asked her husband to help her for free and the results were amazing! He gave her an abdominoplasty and her abdomen was beautiful! So a new abdomen would be nice... Last thing on my list? Breast enlargement. Seriously, after awhile, they only get in the way. I give most of those "Swan" women a year before they went whining back to the doctor with back pain needing reductions.
I think that that falls under the same category as reconstructive surgery after a car wreck. I mean, sextuplets, whew! Just one baby at a time has thrashed my abdomen.

I agree with miss fluffy about making oneself look nicer to help you find a hubby...but, most of the women on that show were married. I have seen time and time again where a simple loving woman with a family got plastic surgery, or recieved a bunch of money (from a deceased person) etc, they thought they were so great all of a sudden, and left their husbands. I would want to see each of these situations after a year. I bet you most of these "swans" left their hubby's and went searching for something "better." You know, now that she got upgraded, she's too good for him. Sad...

If I got breast cancer and had to have them removed...I would get a breast reconstruction for sure. Also, I would get a tummy tuck if I was having serious problems with excess fat after all my kids are born. That is it though.

If I'm ever kicked in the face by a donkey, I see nothing wrong with trying to restore the face that God gave me.
But drastically changing my natural appearance to appeal to society's misplaced standards of beauty would be wrong.

"And the award goes to . . ."
You are absolutely right, Katie Lynn. There is a huge difference between re-constructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. In two sentences, you've provided the best answer to the question.

It's easy for Katie Lynn to say that-- she's very pretty and doesn't have any kids yet.
For other women, it's not so cut and dried.
