Hey, Ger, my fourth is named Rachel Marie, too, and she came so fast I could've had her at home.....after that I've tended to go to the hospital a bit early, then my labors usually slow down, the pitocin is administered, and then it gets real painful. I kind of wish all my labors were like my fourth, but at the time it was scary, thinking I'd give birth in the car, the hospital lobby, etc. (I delivered half an hour after getting to the hospital, and it took that long only because my doctor was stuck in traffic and they told me to "hold off.")
Sorry to have created such a disturbance here. I still haven't heard from anybody that has experienced hypnobirthing! Probably won't use it anyway, as I don't want to pay for a class. Was just wondering what it was all about.

I have had three births, two of which were without epidural and I have NO idea what this 'ring of fire' thing is about?

I have had three births, two of which were without epidural and I have NO idea what this 'ring of fire' thing is about? Some women use the phrase to describe the baby crowning. It's really bad for some, but I didn't find that part too bad. I found that pain easier to deal with than the contractions. Probably because it's a localized pain, rather than contractions which you feel almost through your whole body.

Nothing quite like using words such as "ring of fire" to make me really look forward to the inevitable . I hope the Bradley classes help me out. I read something on a midwifery site yesterday that said giving birth gives some women a great orgasm. Yea right!! Somehow, I just really don't believe that.

Believe nothing just because a so-called wise person said it. Believe nothing just because a belief is generally held. Believe nothing just because it is said in ancient books. Believe nothing just because it is said to be of divine origin. Believe nothing just because someone else believes it. Believe only what you yourself test and judge to be true.– Buddha
Note: According to this precept, I find that Buddhism is NOT true. I have tested and judged many things, and the only Truth I have found is in God's One True Church: The Catholic Church.
Dear Lord, I know I can live by Your Holy Will every moment of my life, because You have given me faith that Your Grace will enable me to.

Oh okay, I never actually heard that phrase before. I actually don't find that bit the worst either, probably because as Erin says it's more localised. Don't worry Miss Fluffy, I don't think it's anything like a ring of fire - which is why I had no idea what people were on about.

Yeah, it's that terrible moment when you have a huge contraction, you want to push but don't want to push, everybody is telling you to push push push...but once that baby's head comes out, it's basically the "ahhhhhh, that's overwith feeling"..the greatest feeling, in my opinion. Until they start stitching up the tear in the perineum.
Don't worry Miss Fluffy. Remember, as it says in Genesis, this is how we earn our way to heaven (well, it doesn't quite say it that way, but that's how I look at it - I'd rather do this every two years or so than have to go earn my living by the sweat of my brow).

Oh my goodness....I will never, ever be able to listen to that song the same way again!! For some reason, I never made that connection before. Thanks for ruining Johnny Cash for me Spooks... By the time it got to "And it burns, burns, burns...that ring of fire...that ring of fire" I was dying over here. Oh man...maybe I will just take Ger's advice and pray more easily with the epidural. On a serious note, I'm sorry if that phrase scared you, Miss Fluffy. The bad thing is, I didn't ever HEAR that phrase until after I'd already had my first son. Since I had an epidural, I felt no such thing and now I'm scared to experience birth without it because of terms like that. But the ladies here seem to downplay it as not the worst thing that you'll encounter, so maybe it's all in my head! ;) Until they start stitching up the tear in the perineum.
Christina, you really do want to scare her, don't you? Seriously, though, why would they let you tear? Wouldn't an episiotomy be better or cleaner if it one was in danger of tearing? Just curious here...

If you haven't had an epidural, DEMAND gas and air for the stitches. Yeah, watch me sit and suffer because they think I'm being babyish. They can all go boil their heads if they think I will listen to their tut-tutting over my demands for gas and air when it comes to being stitched, after going through all THAT.
