Hi All-

I have a quick question.

As we all know, the Motu Proprio came out on 07/07/07. But the following letter said the document would take effect on Sep. 14, 2007. What exactly does this mean? Does it mean that no priest has to agree to celebrate a TLM until the said date? Help please?

Thanks,

Michael

This would be strange. It's like saying that the Latin Mass was never abrogated... as of September 14. But until we declare that it was never abrogated, it is abrogated.

On a more mystical note, September 14th is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. Not a bad date for restoring the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and possibly a reminder that the world may crucify us for adhering to Tradition.

Good point.

I sort of figure that the date is there to give the bishops time to get their ducks in a row.

My understanding is that the indult system still applies until then.  This also gives the priests who want to learn the Extraordinary form some time to do so, without the laity knocking down their doors.

Anyone else thinking the Holy Father may celebrate the Extraordinary form that day himself?  I'd want to see it.  ^_^

my reading is that since the reasoning given for private masses is that  it was never abrogated, priests have been permitted to use the missal  of 1962 from 1962 until now in private masses.  the only things  that will not take effect until Sept. 14 are the actual legalities  regarding pastors allowing public masses et cetera et cetera.  but  as of right now, neigh, as of 1962, any priest can say the old rite in  a private mass.

Say they need to bring in an FSSP priest or otherwise set up for their priests to know how to say the Mass?
