Apologies for the thread resurrection - I assumed that if one already existed, it was better to post on that. I suppose I can see how it might be annoying for people reading through the top posts thinking they're new, so I won't do it in future.

I've never heard of anyone successfully losing weight for more than a couple of weeks on a fad diet, but they can make for amusing anecdotes. I know girls who use them when they want to wear a tiny dress to a party or wedding. I think the only long-term successes come from pretty radical lifestyle changes.

I lost 40 lbs and kept it off for 1 year and 1/2.  The secret (for me) was to  quit drinking. Anything with alcohol.
Possibly the craving while drinking, the actual drinking, a bunch of factors.
But I lost a lot of weight and kept it off.
I read somewhere, that when you drink and eat, the body naturally burns the alcohol before it burns the food. So when it burns enough alcohol, it never really gets to burning off the food.

"Nothing is more miserable than those people who never failed to attack their own salvation. When there was need to observe the Law, they trampled it under foot. Now that the Law has ceased to bind, they obstinately strive to observe it. What could be more pitiable that those who provoke God not only by transgressing the Law but also by keeping it? But at any rate the Jews say that they, too, adore God. God forbid that I say that. No Jew adores God! Who say so? The Son of God say so. For he said: "If you were to know my Father, you would also know me. But you neither know me nor do you know my Father". Could I produce a witness more trustworthy than the Son of God?"  St. John Chrysostom Sunday Homily
