My plan when I retire in 6 years 3 months and 8 days, is to get a job at Forbes Field so I can live out northwest of Topeka and go to Maple Hill FSSP for Mass.

Boy If some of you think that St. Marys is a sleepy town; just try Maple Hill  LOL...Don't blink or you will miss it.

I dont want to live in a town at all, so it suits me fine.  If I can get to Topeka in an hour, that all the civilization I need.

Call me a Johnson County snob, but Topeka does not count as civilization!  LOL

I like small towns. St. Marys had a grocery store (Goeckels, since caught on fire and burnt down) a few mom and pop restaurants (Froggies, That little Irish pub that the Steven's family started whose name escapes me) a drug store, the co-op to buy farm and hardware supplies, and other amenities.

just fyi: Tully's is closed. Been closed since we got here last July at least. It had been owned by The Cain's (of Maple Hill) but they sold it and then those owners closed it... Mr Cain is my children's religion teacher at SJV school in Maple Hill, that is how I know this. Smile  There is a new grocery store, Ray's Apple Market, that opened up (some time last yr I think).  I like the fact that the town rec dept is expanding to include new sports... ie, a new soccer league just started.  If my children's school was in St Marys, we'd probably stay here but we're not "of" the academy sort. Smile  We'll be buying a house in Maple Hill in the next few months.  Overall, the most striking difference between Kansas and the Northern East Coast is the hospitality and just genuine niceness and charity of people here.  This is not what we experienced in our 30+ years in Maine.

So... anyone have any information on Welwyn? Anyone been there, anyone have feedback? I find it an interesting experiment (I mean this in the positive)

(By the way...  GO JAYHAWKS! I went to school there in the Roy vs. Norm years... so forgive me!)

I'd have to add that, personally, Kansas would be more attractive than the Northeast, in terms of hospitaility. The Northeast would be more geographically attractive, though. More rain, As I live in the Canadian Rockies... I feel pretty lucky!

Interesting..I have found the people of Central NY to be every bit as nice as both St. Marys and where i grew up in the Midwest (St. Louis)..CNy is not Maine, though...Oh well...to each his own...
