Where have all the Cowboys Gone?

I doubt it is just me, but it seems that every where I look nowadays all I see is emasculated men walking around. Whether they espouse the title "metrosexual" or simply homosexual, the chances of coming across a male under the age of 35 behaving or dressing in serious and masculine manner is becoming a rare site and I have to admit, because it is getting next to impossible, I have stopped trying to discern who is gay and who is not. Being a college student on campus it is something which is practically endemic in males who are either on this side of the spectrum or completely on the other side (super dooper jock!). Most troubling to me though is the fact this breed of males must be exercising terrible effects in the minds of young children who see them around them and on TV and think this is the norm. What do you all think we can do as lay people about this?

Two of my children are in college (one a secular state university, the other in a Catholic college) and both know plenty of "normal" guys.

I also (as the mother) meet plenty of "normal" young men, both through my husband's work and through regular social contacts.

Not really sure what your particular problem is .... Perhaps you need new friends?

To heck with the Cowboys, how about just the adult men? Or, Men.

When did every (American) male seemingly embrace arrested adolescence?  I'm 40, and when I survey the habits and dress of men my age, I see that shorts, sneakers, and a baseball cap seems to be the only acceptable uniform.  Even now, and it happens to be a cool November in New England.

It seems to me that grown men now wish to remain boys, and act & dress accordingly.

Maybe what you are seeing is this lack of seriousness/maturity?

I see it too.  But there are real cowboys out there.  You won't find them on college campuses.  You'll find them working trades, or out in the country.  Maybe try going on some vacations to ranches or something.

I remember looking forward to GETTING to wear long pants - it was a small rite of passage.

"Cowboy" has become a derogatory term for White, oppressive, imperialist, superior male. On today's campuses what guy would want to carry that kind of baggage?! Of course, sometimes it is kinda fun to work in a place where everyone wears Birkenstock's (talk about stupid fashion ideas, who in their right mind would want to see a man's hairy toes?) to come in with jeans, a Western shirt and boots! Of course it helps to be over 40 and secure in yourself.

I don't think you'll find them with the cowboys.   You won't find them raised as hard-working, tradition-loving Catholics either.

Move to Texas.

I see a lot of wimps, but I've never been in a place quite so bad that "I have stopped trying to discern who is gay and who is not", except maybe Castro Street in San Francisco, CA.
