Last night I caught a very brief snippet of  EWTN's "Backstage". I don't usually watch EWTN but while flipping through the channels I was struck by what appeared to be an Evangelical praise-fest. (A woman with dyed,  big blonde hair and a man at a keyboard lip-syncing songs that wouldn't be considered artistically worthy enough to qualify as Madison avenue advertising jingles.)

I'm trying to restrain myself because I don't want to make this seem like a personal attack on these "musicians" but when I learned that the song they were singing had actually been awarded the 2004 United Catholic Music & Video Association's Liturgical Song of the Year my jaw hit the floor.

This, evidently, is what passes for "liturgical" music in Novus Ordo circles these days:

I think I might throw up.  Ewww.  That might actually be worse than "Eagles Wings."

  What you mean you haven't seen the 50+ year old hippie woman with long straight blond hair who wears a flower garland on her head and sings very badly and dances around all "litugical dance" like?

  She's a regular guest! One of the reasons we stopped allowing EWTN to be turned on in the home.

No, as I said, I never watch EWTN so this was my first (and last) experience with "Maureen and Bill"

I have a tin ear and can't carry a tune to save my life but I can recognize garbage when I hear it.  EWTN should be ashamed for airing this drivel.

It's no better, or worse, then the stream of Evangelical Preachers (including women) who they put on in the early morning hours.  More of that Springtime I keep hearing about I suppose.

Or "Gather Us In".

"Gather Us In", the choir is droning;
"Gather Us In" is our entrance song.
"Gather Us In" sounds just like groaning;
I notice no one is singing along.

"Gather Us In" is sung every Sunday;
"Gather Us In" is sung every Mass.
Give us a break and sing something different,
"Gather Us In" gets old really fast.

Oh man... here's their other song that won that award. Bread of Life.

It's almost indistinguishable from the other one.

Raffi looks like Mozart compared to these people. At least kids like Raffi.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew!

This is "liturgical" music?  This won an award?

I'm totally embarassed to admit that I used to (a very looooong time ago) attend a "white" evangelical church.  You know, the kind with the overhead projector and the words to sappy "praise" music on the screen.  I got soooooo emotional singing that banal music.  Or wait, was that the Franciscan U. of Steubenville - maybe I'm just confused...

Now I know prots are material heretics and all, but at least they didn't have the tacky screen at the "black" churches I have attended, and the music was good.
