I prefer icons too, but my home would feel incomplete if I didn't have a statue of the Blessed Mother and a traditional crucifix. We sell realistic wood crucifixes at the church supply store where I work on Saturdays, handcarved from Italy (they cost a fortune!) but nowhere as graphic as the one in the link. A statue like that doesn't have to be on display in the living room or family room. It can remain in a private room, used only during Lent/Holy Week, not all year long.

On a related note I have a famous print of the tortured face of Christ in Veronica's Veil. It's very spooky looking to most people, but I love it and derive great comfort from it. I bring it out only on Good Friday. It's a very special devotional piece for me.

Had a family friend, that became a N.O. Deacon, who told me after seeing "The Passion of the Christ" that he didn't need to have anything to do with that sort of violence.

I told him that Christ didn't really need that either but thats what happened. And we are called to be like Christ. Can we expect less?
