Ladies,

isn't it interesting that they wonder why they can't get dates?

I can't speak to insurance numbers, but sometimes I think my wife drives with the "Braille method".

All I know is, if I'm in traffic, my consistent experience is:

1.  Male drivers allow you to merge ahead of them about 2/3 of the time.

2.  Female drivers allow you to merge ahead of them about 1/3 of the time.

Anecdotally, the absolute worst argument I've seen in traffic about driving was between two women--I had to hold my son's ears!

I am a big fan of Danica too--good for her!

That is TOTALLY true.  I don't think any male has ever flipped me off while driving.  More than a few women have-- usually while they're driving (w)recklessly.

Incidentally, has anyone ever wondered what finger is being used in these emoticons?

Yup. Insurance companies wouldn't make an obvious mistake of charging more for men than women if it were as simple as there being more men than women out there driving. Their money is worth too much to them.

Alaric was right. It is precisely that women drive much fewer miles that allows insurance to charge lower rates for women. If you look at NHTSA data you'll see that women, as a percentage of drivers and as a percentage of miles driven, are drivers in more fatal accidents than men. It's not an obvious mistake that insurance companies charge women less. They understand that the amount of miles men drive exposes them to more accidents as a whole. (This is why insurance companies ask how many miles you drive to work.) Ask yourselves this: how many times did your mother drive compared to your father when you were younger. My mother never drove, unless my father was sick. Compared to my wife, I log over 90% of the miles on our vehicle. Insurance companies realize that women drive less, thus reducing accident exposure. It is a perfectly logical actuarial decision. Someone alluded to discrimination in an earlier post; but it is the exact opposite: women are charged more for their per mile driving than men. It is only because men drive SO many more miles that they are charged more in the aggregate.

No, it still makes no sense. You can't generalize the behavior of a gender that includes hundreds of millions of people! Logic would then dictate individuals rates should be determined by # of miles driven, and not gender so that a guy who drives 50 miles a year won't be charged the same as a guy who drives 50000 miles a year.
