If you want a hair shirt just buy an alpaca sweater for 20 bucks.

You're right. If you want yet a more itchy one buy a sweater of pure (Scotch) Shetland wool. (The fibers are shorter than those of alpaca). Be humble, buy a used one by eBay (5 - 10$).

People talk vaguely about the innocence of a little child, but they take mighty good care not to let it out of their sight for twenty minutes.-Saki.

The Modernist's Prayer  by R.A. Knox
O God, forasmuch as without Thee
We are not enabled to doubt Thee,
Help us all by Thy Grace
To convince the whole race
It knows nothing whatever about Thee.

St. Francis of Sales ( "Introduction to the Devout Life " ) warned married people to avoid cilice or hair-shirt.  Penance is a way of prier, imagine your own way. If you want, start fasting. It resembles a physical exercise for maintaining physical fitness.

I'd say "Get married." Between a souse and your in-laws, that can amount to some pretty heroic spiritual mortification.

A good friend and worthy adversary.

Live your life in such a way that every morning when your feet hit the floor...Satan shudders and says..."Oh No...he's AWAKE!"

Sometimes the Internet reminds me of being in a chicken coop with an infinite number of Chicken Littles at any given millisecond dodging pieces of their falling skies.

There is a subtle difference between "invincible ignorance" and intolerably stupid.
