I certainly understand your worry.  I think that physical pain is among my greatest fears.  There really is no real solution, but I can assure you that it will not be nearly as bad as your mind will imagine.  Try to keep your mind off of it.  Give it to God and let go (I know thats hard, but try).  Keep in mind that it is not for naught.  Offer it up in atonement for your sins or others.

Also remember that God will never let you go through anything that you can't deal with.

I'll be undergoing a surgery in the near future where I'll have general anaesthesia. That's what I'm scared of... to pieces, in fact! I guess we all have our fears. In these modern times, pain can be controlled. You might not experience much pain afterwards at all. Until then, you can offer up your fear. We both can!

Same here. I'm not so much scared of pain management afterwards, although I'm told it will be quite uncomfortable for a time. It's the anesthesia for the operation.  I've never had surgery - only the boys and I was awake for that. It's the fear of falling asleep unwillingly and then not being able to wake up.  And I think about my boys and what they'll do without me.

That's why I keep putting it off. But I can't do that forever.

If it is a vaginal ultrasound, the worst pain will be the feeling of immodesty.  Ask for an explaination from the doctor, and ask if it will be painful.  If it is the same procedure, mine wasn't.

Prayers for you!

When in Rome, do as you done in Milledgeville.

If it's what we're all thinking of, I second other ladies' experiences of this type of ultrasound.... it can feel a bit immodest, but you are well covered, the technician is respectful, & there is nothing to be ashamed about in caring properly for your health. Indeed, quite the opposite.

The procedure was not difficult for me post-marriage -- perhaps a little uncomfortable, though not much more than your average yearly female checkup -- but pre-marriage I suppose your mileage may vary. I advise breathing deeply and thinking happy thoughts. And perhaps taking a shot of bourbon or two half an hour beforehand (unless you plan to ask for relaxing drugs, of course). They should also warm the instrument to make it easier -- if they don't, ask them to. Don't be shy. The more you can relax, the easier it will go. You will no doubt be fine.

Ask for a valium. I had to have surgery on my hand a few years ago and had the option of general anesthesia, which I declined. The MD prescribed one 10mg valium and it was very effective in relieving the anxiety and discomfort (BP cuff strapped on like a touriquet for over an hour).

Praying that all goes well.

Do you have a set of sacrifice beads? They usually come in strings of ten like decade rosaries. You slip a bead through your fingers for every sacrifice you make during your day. St. Therese practiced this devotion daily. If you're going to be in pain before or after, then I highly recommend you have them at your side.

I will be praying for you.
