I wasn't at all trying to condemn the Spanish Inquisition. I defend whenever I see it attacked. It was just an interesting observation.

As for the other stuff, I wouldn't bring up the papacy during the Spanish Inquisition as the reigning pope was the notorious Alexander VI whose bastard son was inspiration for "The Prince."

King Ferdinand, though imperfect, was no tool. The Inquisition was necessary and Ferdinand and Isabel had nothing but good intentions concerning it. Even after gaining permission to run it they delayed it two years in hopes the threat would be enough and that maybe the conversos would stop in the meantime.
