I was sad because of how glad people were to see him go.  He probably had one of the toughest terms as President, and nobody at all seemed grateful for his service.  Obama's speech even had a few pointed remarks obviously directed at Bush, that his administration would do so much better than his.  No matter what you think of his politics, Bush is a man of integrity and I respect him for that.  I hope he has a very peaceful retirement in Texas.

I agree and as much as I disliked Bush it made me cringe to hear the words "President Obama".

George Bush is going to live the rest of his life in a mansion in Dallas. He will never worry where his next meal is coming from. He will never have to earn a living by the sweat of his brow. I think he'll be just fine, with or without our sympathy.

Having said that, I do feel sorry for him that he won't get to ride Air Force One anymore. That would be sweet. I'm presuming the Prez doesn't have to remove his stupid shoes prior to boarding. However, getting constantly shadowed by guys in sunglasses carrying automatic weapons would start to bug after about an hour. So, there's always a trade off I suppose.

Bush is the first president not to receive lifetime Secret Service. He does get free travel, using the US Executive fleet (as he did today for the first time), free medical, etc.

I imagined him getting back to his house in TX, kicking off his shoes and sinking gratefully onto the couch in his quiet house, saying, "Well, I'm glad *that's* over.  Laura, honey, would you bring me a beer?  And call us in a pizza; we're staying in tonight."

I would call that sweet relief.  Smile

Wait.  You mean he gets to use Air Force One anytime he wants???  That executive fleet?  Way cool.

And he gets the Secret Service for 10 years.  Meh.  By that time, everyone will have forgotten he was even President.

An Air Force One-type plane - not the real thing. He doesn't need the military-grade tactical communications, etc.

Mmmmm.  Well, you know they have two?  Maybe if the Prez is using one, Bush could use the other.

Of course, if I owned a multi-million dollar mansion in Dallas, I'd never leave home so I wouldn't need free plane rides.  But then, my tastes are simple.  Just give me a big ass house, fat pension and free medical care and I'm content.

I felt a bit sad, not for President Bush per se but for the country. When they stood on the steps waving of Cheney George stood with his usually friendly smile and relaxed stance joking while Obama persisted in his Mussolini impression looking down his nose at the world past his elevated chin.

Did anyone else feel sad for him today?

Yes. I was never particularly anti-Bush. Maybe it's Texan bonding or something.

He strikes me as the kind of guy you can play beer pong with and that will try to moonwalk and do "the worm" on the patio after only 3 beers into the night.

That being said, he's had a vote of no confidence from me since day one.

He's like an over-grown frat-boy.  Fun to have around at parties but its not like you'd want him in charge of anything important.

Anyway, did I feel sad? No, because I made a point to not watch TV today but I have a feeling he's glad its over.

Jimmy Carter once said that the day after leaving office he woke up and wept. He thought "What am I going to do with the rest of my life?"

Ah, these "type A" personalities need help, seriously.
