There's a cute short chapter book out called St. Therese and the Roses that would be appropriate for your girls.  My little sister really enjoyed it last year when she was in fifth grade.  It gives the story of the Martin family in story form.  Great for introducing Story of a Soul.  About six years later.

For that matter, Ignatius Press (www.ignatius) has reprinted a lot of the Vision books, of which this is one.  They are about 4th grade level -  I know because I just pulled out some to give to my reluctant 4th grade boy.
