So, does it make sense to attack Bp. Williamson because other people have an over-fondness for him?  Or would it make more sense to remind them that he isn't the Pope and his letters are pastoral and not dogmatic?

I never said there was no criticism to be had, I nearly stated my opinion that he was off the rails meaning much ado about nothing. As opposed to dogma which should be illegal pornography. Context is what were debating not logic , and the context for the two films are miles, thousands of miles apart. It's also a case IMO of the good bishop straining out a gnat while claiming the gnat is a camel. Besides I like the friggen movie Sticking tongue out at you so leave me alone! LOL jus kidden

I think you've touched on the truth whether you realize it or not.  Most people get their undies in a bunch about this letter because 1) they don't like Bp. W or the SSPX, or, 2) they like SOM and feel kinda offended that he's bagging on it.

1) is a form of intellectual dishonesty - they should examine what he has written, discover his points, and talk about those otherwise they're just "shooting the messenger"

2) is a form of pride; I like heavy metal - people bag on that all the time.  But, I can admit they often have good reason, and some reasons for certain songs I completely agree with.  The SOM is no different.  If there is something bad in there, we should be open to it being pointed out even if we like the movie.  And, if it is something along the lines +W sees, I'm thinking it's OK to watch the movie as long as we are aware of the bad points so we don't fall into a trap of thinking that way.

Really, I think most people's reaction to this letter is overreaction, and that's what I'm trying to show (and doing swimmingly I might add, thanks to you and Didi).

I liked the SOM as a musical, but there were things about it I didn't like. Bp. Williamson's critique helped me understand some of those difficulties. The good Bishop has some pretty good insights that were sure to offend many of today's Catholics...because we are so easily offended. This movie is nothing to draw a line in the sand for; but I don't think he was doing that either.

Heavy metal??? Have you ever read what the liberal Allan Bloom (The Closing of the American Mind) had to say about Rock music?
