I was talking with a good friend yesterday about her SSPX sister-in-law. (My friend is NOT SSPX, although she and her husband prefer the TLM).

My friend claims that her SSPX relatives will NOT pose for family pictures - formal or otherwise - with the rest of their "regular" Catholic family. Note that the rest of the "regular" Catholic family is orthodox, mostly Latin mass attending. The SSPX sister-in-law supposedly has stated that she doesn't want to give the wrong impression that she stands in solidarity with her non-SSPX relatives (which, by the way, includes her own parents, also TLM adherents.)

We were wondering what the basis for this is? The sister-in-law is just nutty? Or is there some basis within SSPX circles for this kind of stance/behavior? In asking this, I'm not being critical of SSPXers, I'm just highly curious (and so is my friend.)

I have attended SSPX masses for 18 years, My children go to SSPX Schools, I have family who are SSPX religious and I have numerous other tie-ins to the SSPX. I have never heard of anything even remotely similar to this. Sounds like these people have a geranium in their cranium Cuckoo Cuckoo Cuckoo

Indeed, I know some sedevantist people and I believe this would be extreme even for them. And they are generally much more stringent than the SSPX regarding such matters.

Pictures?!!???  I've been exclusively attending SSPX Masses for 6 years.  Two of our children's Godparents are NO.  Would I be in pictures?  Of, course.  The Godfather of my daughter I would take a bullet for (Him being with me in the Army from Basic to ETS).  People like that are a bit excessive.  But you don't know what she has had to put up with.  She mighjt be sick of the crap the rest of the family hands out and wants to make a point.

I make a point of NEVER attending Mass with the rest of my family (unless they go with me) or even the guy (who has been with me -- to Mass) I'd take the bullet for.  But then, that ain't just a pic.  No doubt she has her reasons.  Perhaps they're better than your friend is letting on.  There might  be real history there and your freind may just be setting you up on her side of it...I don't know, but I would not jump to any conclusions on that count.

I'd believe it and no, not because I'm critical of the SSPX. But there is a tendency in many zealous Trads, especially those of the SSPX(but Ive seen it from some FSSP parishioners), to have this very elitist mentality which makes people make up rules as they go. I know of at least two different SSPX families that sent their kids to our FSSP school and both families(from different times and different SSPX chapels) refused to let their children participate in the spiritual communal life of the school. This means they weren't allowed to go to FSSP priests for weekly confession as the whole school did on Fridays nor where they allowed to go to Mass. The one mother freaked out when she found out her son, of all things, received Communion from a non-SSPX priest! I am not making this up at all! I could go into more but these examples are fine for now.

Foolish then, is he who departs from the Vicar of Christ Crucified, who has the keys of the Blood, or who goes against him . . . I guess the question there is, to what extent is that attitude encouraged from the pulpit?  It's one thing for the laity themselves to be nutters, quite another for the priest to instruct or otherwise encourage them in it.

But you also have to wonder, why does this mentality exist in so many trads? Even if such orders are not explicitly coming from the pulpit it's coming from somewhere. I've just heard too many first hand accounts of some things SSPX priests have said and done to think it's just the parishioners. And this information wasn't handed down through gossip. Some of this stuff was told to me as if it were positive.
