I need a good edition of the 'Liturgy of the Hours' for seminary.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

You have two options.  The one with vinyl covers in different colors or the one in leather that are all black.  Both versions are published by the Catholic Book Publishing Company and no one else. I have the leather cover because somebody bought it for me, but most guys have the colored vinyl, so if you want to fit in, go cheap.  That's my suggestion.  Tip o' the hat

I used the one volume Christian Prayer in vinyl (I found my copy at a St. Vinny's store for $3.00  ;D), then switched to the full Liturgy of the Hours last year.  I got my set on e-bay.  One e-bay store has the leather bound set for $144.00, only $10.00 more than the vinyl set - worth it, in my opnion.

You're pretty much stuck with the Catholic Book Publishing version if you need the full set. Their edition isn't too bad. It has a few typos here and there, and it could use more illustrations.

The major problem with any and all English-language editions of the LOTH is that the Antiphons for Sunday are incorrect vis-a-vis the Latin edition. As it is right now in the English edition of the LOTH, the Magnificat Antiphon for First Vespers echos the Gospel reading for Year A. The Benedictus Antiphon for Sunday Lauds is related to Year B's Gospel. The Magnificat Antiphon for Second Vespers brings to mind the Gospel for Year C. However, the 2002 Latin Editio Typica of the LOTH, Sunday Antiphons for all three Hours reference the same Gospel for the year.

Here is an example, using the 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B:

CBP LOTH (ICEL translation):

First Vespers: Those who welcome you are welcoming me, and those who welcome me are welcoming him who sent me.
Lauds: Jesus, turning, saw the women and said, Take courage, daughter; your faith has saved you, alleluia.
Second Vespers (this was not actually prayed today because First Vespers of Ss. Peter & Paul took precedence): The Son of Man did not come to condemn men but to save them.

Liturgia Horarum (2002 Editio Typica):

First Vespers: The woman said to herself: If I touch even His garments, I shall be made well.
Lauds: Jesus, turning, and seeing to the woman, said: Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.
Second Vespers: The girl is not dead, but sleeping. And holding the girl's hand, He said: Little girl, I say to you, arise.

It's really not that big of a deal, it's just really annoying. This is because the aforementioned ICEL edition is the one that is normative throughout much of the English-speaking world. There is no "official" English translation of the 2002 LOTH yet (and there won't be for some time).

I promise not to put anything here which might help us question our mind-forged manacles, inspire us, or help us in any way at all.

N.B.: I will not be posting on this site again until the Christmas octave. Have a good Advent.

I think if you have a Barnes and Noble membership card, or a friend who does...
You can use their member program to get the LOTH on their website for like, $100 or $120.  I forget which.

I'd go to Barnes and Noble, if I were going to buy a new set.  Their copies are cheaper than others I've seen, even without the membership! Smile
